Getting therapeutic care isn’t easy for young adults. A 2023 study found that 3 out of 4 young adults feel embarrassed or face stigmatized reactions when discussing their mental health. This, coupled with the mental health system’s history of harm toward Black, brown, LGBTQIA+, and disabled communities, leads to a well-founded distrust in clinicians. Lack of cultural competency and the power dynamic between adults and youth only make it harder for young people to open up. But the only way to make it past these barriers is to talk about them.
