Last Saturday, I touched down in Grenada for an unplanned and much needed weekend of soca, Jab* and if you can believe it—rest.
First there was the warm smile and welcome from
@tourdespice who escorted me up the hill to my stay at
@mountcinnamongrenada . While I’d usually run to the beach, I needed a nap for the night ahead: a full on soca fete with Grenada’s bright star
@vghnofficial whose single “Jab Decision” has a fervent hold on the island. He brought out a few friends from across the Caribbean, including
@fullblownofficial , the producers behind my summer jam “Take It Easy.”
Back in the room at 4 am, I had sweet dreams of my upcoming massage at the hotel’s spa. Thankfully my body was nice and loose because the rest of the day was spent chasing the revelry of IShowSpeed’s tour spot in Greenz. His visit sparked an impromptu “Jab Jab” on the Carenage.
My hosts
@yvettenoelschure and
@tenilleclarke1 explained that “Jab” — covering your body in black oil and wearing horns — is the cornerstone of Grenada’s culture celebrating rebellion and pride. Over and over they told me how lucky I was experiencing Jab outside of Spicemas, Grenada’s carnival in August.
The next morning I wanted a walk on the beach and just one more rum punch before my flight home. Even with only 48 hours in Greenz, it’s a “Jab Decision” I’d make over and over again.
