“Contact is a Photo Lab.” It says it on our door. What it doesn’t say is; “We love artists” or “We will do what we can for you” or “We are a community resource,” but all those things are true as well. Artists need to be create, and the past few years have become increasingly challenging for a lot of artists to do that. Life has been happening to us all in varying degrees. The best way to deal with turbulent energy, is to transmute it into something beautiful. This month, we’re giving away a few day passes to allow you time to print on Thursdays. We’ll be giving 8 artists time to make prints in our darkroom, with zero rental fees. We’ll make announcements for the winners every Wednesday between 9-9:30PST via stories. Use the hashtag #ContactisaPhotoLab to enter.

Just in time to scan your holiday memories or getting started on the project you were ideating at the end of last year; our Imacon scanner is back from being serviced and ready for your negatives. Rentals are here at the lab, and we have carriers for 35mm and medium format films. The first hour comes with a brief overview of how to use the scanner to ensure, we are all aware of how the instrument works. For the remainder of February, we’ll be offering hourly rentals with a $50/hr discount. Give us a call or an email to reserve your session.

Anticipating a “family time” overload? We’ve got a few dark(and quiet)rooms you can sneak off to while everyone is distracted by food, football, and politics. Join us this Sunday for a few hours of stress-free color printing, funky vibes from our latest hi-fi configuration, and the time to try something you’ve been wanting to do for a while. All you’ll need to bring is your developed negatives. Be sure to be specific on which session you’d like to attend, the 10am or the 2PM. Email [email protected] to register

The darkroom process is an art of its own, and with any art, the ability to magnify the self and its experiences is natural result of the process. It’s ironic that with printing, “enlarging” is literally the process, and according to @marcvalesella , that’s is exactly the way we magnify our voices as photographers.

Which Stevie Wonder songs do you love the most? Is there even one that stands out more than the rest? Last week we got to celebrate our very own @brucewtalamon at a dinner and reception for @artmelanated ’s Celebration Stevie Wonder. For the next 3 months, there are various works depicting and inspired by Mr. Stevie; including some prints from us, on display at the @andazweho .

As we’re celebrating Hip-Hop’s 50th, we wanted to shoutout and celebrate our family @bpleasel . Straight outta Limerick, Ireland, B+ not only documented the coming of age, but has been a long time student and contributor to the culture that is Hip-Hop. We’ve had the honor of working with B+ on some iconic and important photographs in Hip-Hop.

This is a darkroom print by @marcvalesella of @thewiltern in the early 80s. This piece of LA history was built in 1931 and was almost demolished twice before it was dramatically saved and underwent a 4-year renovation, which is around the time this was taken. Contact and Marc would like to thank our workshop participants for their time with us today. Our aim with these workshops is to assist you in deepening your exploration of this medium and advancing in your personal skillsets and careers. Better comprehending exposure, grasping negative density, and being able to visualize what will look good printed, is becoming a better photographer. Lastly, we are going to spend tomorrow on non-art related matters but we’ll be available again on Tuesday. ✌🏾🎞🔬🔒
