The £520,000 Hamster? 🐹⚖️
What happens when a UK regulator meets a US-based "anarchic" message board? You get a massive fine and an AI-generated rodent.
The UK’s online safety regulator, Ofcom, just slapped 4Chan with a £520,000 fine for failing to comply with the Online Safety Act. The breakdown:
£450k for lacking age checks to prevent minors from seeing adult content.
£50k for failing to assess risks of illegal material.
£20k for lack of transparency on user protection.
The Twist? 4Chan’s legal representation responded to the demand not with a legal brief, but with an AI-generated image of a hamster in a Godzilla suit holding a peanut. 🥜
The Bigger Picture: This isn't just about a meme. It highlights a massive "jurisdictional headache" in tech. 4Chan argues that because they operate in the US, they are protected by the First Amendment and don't owe the UK a penny. Meanwhile, Ofcom maintains that if you provide services to UK citizens, you follow UK rules—just like toys or alcohol.
With the US administration reportedly "growing tired" of foreign regulation on American tech, we are seeing a widening gap between global safety standards and Silicon Valley's "free speech" absolutism.
What do you think? Can a UK regulator actually force a US company to pay? Or is the "Online Safety Act" hitting a brick wall at the Atlantic Ocean? 🌊
👇 Let’s discuss in the comments.
