Radio One hosted Her Legacy: Celebrating Matriarchs’ Mothers & Mentors in Durham, NC. The event featured an inspiring speech from women in leadership, an awards ceremony, an INCREDIBLE panel on the topic of “Strong Women, Strong Communities, A better tomorrow”, a performance by Queen Sheba, a highlight of the women of Radio One, and, of course, a conversation with Cathy Hughes and
@mstinaknowles .
First—what a complete honor to be in physical space with so many powerful Womxn.
The overall event was a 10.
Tina was a 10.
But baby, that conversation with Cathy was a -0 😭.
Consumer reports matter, and I also understand the importance of respecting those who paved the way, but Cathy conducting that interview was such a hard left from the event's theme.
I know that’s her homegirl, but she really was up there talking to her instead of with us. The conversation was male-centered most of the time, and the focus was more on Tina’s daughters instead of Tina’s incredible life path, which I was really hoping for. Yes, Cathy didn’t read the book, but there is so much more to Theeee Matriarch.
I wish she had been asked about the deep curiosity that led her into her ancestral research. How did she navigate the sometimes heavy feelings that arise from the information she found? What astonished her most about her bloodline? How was her full experience in Africa?!
Is
@cecred getting a styling crème?!?
I wish I could have told her that seeing her loving on her daughters and watching her daughters love on their daughters and children, healed so many parts of THIS little girl who struggles with a relationship with her own mother and has no more grandmas to run to.
I left with an even bigger desire to push intergenerational leadership and how much more work must be done to integrate matriarchal systems.
Again, the event was lovely, and I am more than happy we were able to attend!
@mstinaknowles handled the entire conversation as gracefully as expected. Themes: Love for sisterhood & mothering.
