Nestled in Adelaide CBD, the site featured a symmetrical cottage in disrepair and a mature Illawarra Flame tree. The brief restored the cottage and added a rear extension matching its footprint, with access from the garden and main corridor. Overshadowed to the north, the design became a study in light. A two-storey southwest volume captures the sun path, with high windows washing walls and enhancing material texture. Woodfire chimneys anchor the lounge and terrace, reinforcing permanence. A restrained palette of concrete masonry unifies spaces, softened by timber joinery and furniture. Sheer curtains temper light seasonally, adding an ephemeral layer to solid forms. Insulated cavity brick walls provide thermal comfort, while the Flame tree filters summer sun. The result is a clear, robust yet warm home that will deepen in character over time. Allegato House stands as a testament to brick craftsmanship on Wurundjeri Country, Toorak. An urban infill project that speaks eloquently to its heritage neighbours while asserting its contemporary identity through masterful material expression. The project's defining feature is its innovative use of long-form pozzolan bricks, a material choice that connects ancient Roman building traditions with modern sustainability principles and adapts this time-tested knowledge for contemporary application. The result is a brick with reduced environmental impact that maintains exceptional structural integrity while contributing to circular economy goals outlined in Australia's clay brick industry sustainability initiatives. The brickwork transcends conventional construction, functioning as both structural-element and architectural-ornament. The façade features shifting patterns that create rhythm and depth. What distinguishes Allegato House is the authentic dialogue between traditional craftwork and architectural innovation, a thoughtful evolution of brick's possibilities. The house engages the streetscape with restraint and sophistication, demonstrating how skillful brickwork can mediate between public presence and private sanctuary. Happy New year from CMAA! kicking off with a project from our awards last year that is designed to keep you cool during the summer heat. Honey House is a thoughtful culmination to a journey shaped by place, materiality, and intent. Like its three sibling homes, Honey House draws inspiration from the rich tradition of Mt. Martha beach houses. The material palette balances robust masonry—selected for its durability and inherent thermal mass—with classic weatherboards that echo the prevailing vernacular of the area. The floor plan has been carefully composed to respond to the site’s constraints, delineating functional zones with clarity while optimising natural light and enhancing the thermal performance of the blockwork. Internally, the home evokes a profound sense of calm. A strong masonry spine anchors the interiors, softened by warm timber accents and a palette of neutral, earthy tones that ground the spaces in comfort and simplicity. The gnarly, twisted moonahs with their ancient, greyed-out bark provide a striking backdrop for the new residence. Sweeping curves, sculptural forms, and a subdued material palette blend with the rough textures and colours of the trees. The Keep ensures comfortable living while remaining deeply connected to the landscape. Congratulations to @k2ldarchitects for becoming finalist for the Think Brick Awards 2025 in Horbury Hunt Commercial Award.“Monument” is a parkside apartment building comprising twenty-four residences, designed as a monolithic exploration of form, texture, and light. Rooted in minimalism and material honesty, the building celebrates the raw beauty of concrete blocks, blending mass and void to create a sense of permanence. Its bold geometric form confidently addresses the challenges of its triangular site, tapering to a sculptural northern apex that commands attention and evokes an iconic presence. Clad entirely in porcelain-toned concrete blocks, the 7-storey building exudes solidity, with deep-set balconies featuring bronze screens that provide shade and privacy. The façade’s honed block finish reveals limestone and nickel aggregates, creating a surface that interacts dynamically with light and shadow, transforming throughout the day and across seasons. Designed to balance resident amenity and minimize impact on neighbours, apartments are oriented for optimal natural light and cross-ventilation. West-facing residences offer curated views of the city and Orrong Park, while rear-facing apartments benefit from a generous setback, preserving light and privacy. The building achieves a 7.5-star NatHERS rating through sustainable features like operable shading systems, rainwater harvesting, and a rooftop solar array. A green roof, planted with native vegetation, fosters biodiversity, reduces stormwater runoff, and enhances insulation while providing a serene retreat. This medium-density development exemplifies confident design that harmonises with its context while creating an enduring environment for modern living.
