Featured at this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, ODE is a garden created as a heartfelt tribute to the mentors and supporters who have shaped the journey of Landscape Designers through the industry. It stands as a living reminder of their invaluable contributions, honouring them through a space that invites reflection, community, and connection. A defining feature of the garden is the use of terracotta roof tiles, inspired by a visit to Dubrovnik, Croatia. There, the timeless beauty and enduring presence of terracotta - layered across rooftops in warm, earthy tones - left a lasting impression. These classic, resilient tiles anchor the rear of the garden, framing the space from its main viewpoint. Beyond their visual appeal, the tiles symbolise longevity, tradition, and the strong foundation laid by those who came before us. In this way, ODE transcends the traditional garden, becoming a space of gratitude, memory, and quiet celebration of the landscape industry’s enduring legacy. UQ Avalon Theatre, reimagined by DM2 Architecture, sensitively restores a much-loved 1920s cultural landmark. Long a creative hub for Brisbane, the theatre has been returned to the University of Queensland’s drama program with a calm, unobtrusive aesthetic shaped by residential materials and Brickworks Roofing Products. La Escandella terracotta tiles — used across both the roof and vertical cladding — help reduce the scale of the new extension, allowing the building to sit comfortably within its suburban setting while adding warmth and tactility. The terracotta rain screen delivers functional performance too, offering a low-maintenance, acoustically sound, and thermally efficient façade. Built by FARA under a design and construct contract, the project shows how contemporary design can honour historic spaces while preparing them for the future. Newport, restored by MacGregor Roofing, is a refined study in architectural integrity and timeless design. Set on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this heritage home demanded a roofing material that would honour its British Colonial character while delivering modern performance and longevity. The homeowners chose La Escandella Planum Slate tiles - a bold yet respectful choice backed by a 100-year product warranty and a colour-for-life guarantee. While many coastal homes are shifting toward metal roofing, this project stands apart for staying true to its origins. The result is a roof that feels both classic and current - rich in texture, depth, and elegance. As a defining feature of the home, it adds character to the streetscape and has already drawn admiration from the local community. This project celebrates tradition, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of clay tiles in Australia’s coastal environments. Terra Firma by Luigi Rosselli Architects is an earthly abode crafted from rammed earth, recycled brick, and re-used terracotta roof tiles, combining sustainability with timeless design. Perched atop a sandstone outcrop overlooking Sydney Harbour’s tidal estuary, the home sits securely on a robust rammed earth base, with upper levels built from salvaged bricks and shaded by geometric terracotta tiles. The ‘J’-shaped plan embeds a pool and terrace into the hollow side, while an elevated deck and ‘captain’s bridge’ master suite nod to the owners’ love of sailing. Solid materials meet fluid forms, reflecting the tension between stability on terra firma and the call of the sea—a home rooted in place yet inspired by movement. Mahogany House by R Architecture is a thoughtful study in connection - between generations, spaces, and the natural world. Set beside Scotchman’s Creek Reserve, the home unfolds as two pods: a double-storey family residence and a single-storey grandparents’ retreat, linked by a lounge and pool courtyard framing a majestic mahogany tree. Clad entirely in Melbourne-made terracotta shingles, the home reads as a singular sculptural form. These earthy tiles wrap seamlessly over walls and roof, creating a tactile continuity that mirrors the surrounding bushland and shifts subtly with the light. Beyond their warmth and texture, the shingles are locally made, energy-efficient, and enduring - anchoring the home in both place and principle. Green House by R Architecture is a bold celebration of form, colour, and craftsmanship. At the heart of the design is a striking light green glazed curved tile — a material that fuses sculptural beauty with practical performance. Crafted from high-quality clay, the tile’s gentle curve introduces a sense of movement and softness to the façade, while its vibrant glaze captures and reflects light, adding depth and drama. The bold green hue stands out against the natural environment, offering a harmonious contrast that feels both modern and timeless. Beyond its visual impact, the tile provides durability, sustainability, and versatility — suitable for walls, facades, and curved architectural forms. It’s a true example of how material innovation can elevate the architectural experience.
