I did not know that Cedric Morris was obsessed with growing irises as well as painting them, cultivating 1,000 seedlings each year and registering at least 90 named varieties. Having developed something of an iris obsession myself recently I feel even more drawn to his paintings than before. This in the excellent Handpicked exhibition @kettlesyard - Flower Painting from 1900 to today.

Extremely proud to share my brother @nearlyoscar ’s brilliant, haunting book Fragile July, just published by award-winning indie publisher @brokensleepbooks . Their motto (pace JH Prynne) is “lay out your unrest” which tbh describes Oz’s unsettling, beautiful work pretty perfectly. The book is a prose-poem in dialogue with photographs, and it captures a time we both remember when things were pretty weird. It might strike a chord with you too. I would be recommending it even if he wasn’t my brother, but this way I get to show off as well.

Artist Spotlight: @matcollishawstudio , Mask of Youth (2018). A deeply-researched recreation of how Elizabeth I might have appeared in 1588 at the age of 55, based on accounts of foreign ambassadors & her medical history, and modelled on the face of her effigy in @westminsterabbeylondon , which is possibly based on a death mask. Promising a seemingly direct encounter with the dead queen, the exposed robotic armature reminds us that this is another construction, as artificial as any of Elizabeth’s original portraits. See it at Tudor Contemporary @heong_gallery@downingcollege_cambridge until 19th April. Open 12-5pm, Weds-Sun, Easter inclusive!
