It’s a long way off from being done but this is a detail in a painting that’s probably going to be called “Where’s Dido” @farthingstephen@turners_house@painting #painting #turner #Carthage
Judging the John Moores Exhibition in 1993 when Peter Doig caught our eye and became the winner . Shocked to see myself with dark hair and a Mustache! How times have changed we even have the internet now . @jmpaintingprize@farthingstephen@walkerartgallery #painting #modernpainting #1993
Dido Inspecting The equipment of the fleet- some thoughts about painting drowned in London about 100 years ago that’s now made its way in a reimagined state to the proofing station over my dining room table In Virginia. Where we go from here who knows but to me at least it’s interesting @turner #painting #landscape [email protected]
The shorter History of Architecture in One Image - from the tent to the Vernacular then to post-modernism and finally the Data Centre #architecture #historyofart #farthingstephen
A Detail of …….Carthage: Dido inspecting the fleet ……. I’ve been working on this for a while - no longer living in Carthage but still thinking about it as a place and Virgil’s epic poem that so excited Turner . It seems in Turners painting the tree may well have represented Aeneas- whose leaves reached heaven but had roots that went directly to hell. It’s an interesting project to wrap my mind around in these troubled times . @farthingstephen@the_tate_gallery #turner @turners_house #painting #carthage @royalacademyarts
Tonight was the first night that I sat at dinner no longer looking to my most recent painting - I’m not sure it’s right yet - but I suspect it’s on the way . Muhammud Iii of Tunisia in the Bardo palace in 1859 #painting #tunis #Louis_simil @stephen.farthing .
The Algebra of a Bey. Not finished but hung above a dining table to be lived with for a while - if I cannot live with it why would anyone else ? So it’s all part of the self editing process. @farthingstephen@royalacademyarts #painting #tunisia #swagger #louis_simil
Re imagining a painting of Bey Muhammed III of Tunis my source was painted in Tunis probably 1859 by an obscure French painter Louis Simil who was born and died in Nimes. Living now in DC painting this painting in DC it is an extraordinary experience going into my studio each day to reflect on and revisit Tunisia and the Ottoman court through the craft of painting. #swagger #painting #occupation @farthingstephen #louis_simil
Painting the Bey - early days but a beginning the start of my first swagger portrait that has taken me as a starting point beyond Europe to North Africa - to a portrait painted by Louis Simil a French painter from Nimes in Southern France of an Ottoman Bey - a long way to go and just a start @farthingstephen@bardo #painting #paintings #tunis #underpainting
A NewStart - the chromatic Skeleton of the first in a new series of paintings - The Ottomans #bardo @farthingstephen@paintbritain #color #oncolor #painting #paintings
A Ghost Called Hope - At 70x100 cm it is a test for a much bigger image . Grown slowly on the canvas with no preliminary drawing the Ghost slowly emerged - I don’t know anything about “My Ghost “ other than he is trying to speak . #painting #ghosts #ghostly #magic @farthingstephen@royalacademyarts
I was the goal keepers age 10 at my infant school - Saint Michael’s Southfields London SW18 - the amazing thing is that I still remember the teams names by their first name initials so many years later
