From August 2025 - We Keep Us Safe.
Improvisation is inherently liberatory. It just feels right to improvise and play with other musicians in liberatory spaces.
We had a hawk flying overhead during our performance and a brilliant sunset. It is so good to feel so free.

I'm so excited to share this new work! We Keep Us Safe is based on the relationship between Blue Herons and Bald Eagles. It's a community-based work that's a contemplation on the call and response movement chant: "Who keeps us safe? We keep us safe!"
@ssszenia , @stephneums , @leanninja and I are classically-trained musicians who rewild our musical gifts by improvising. And we're going to be improvising outdoors on land that has been in the process of rematriation. Land that the Duwamish have been stewards of since time immemorial. Bring a picnic! Let a nice volunteer shuttle you from the Longhouse to The Heron's Nest.
Learn more about the process of this work during the discussion afterward, which will be moderated by Jabali Stewart.
Deep gratitude to @buttonstothetop for your tending and facilitation of relationship at The Heron's Nest. I look forward to hearing your reflections in the discussion after the performance.
slide 1: Flyer with details about the performance. The TLDR is-Sunday July 27th, you can enter the land at 6:40. Show starts at 7:00. Volunteer shuttles run 6:35-6:50. Suggested donation $5-$50, no one turned away for lack of funds. Bring a picnic!
slide 2: Additional details about transportation. TLDR-park at the Duwamish Longhouse, let a nice volunteer shuttle you to The Heron's Nest. Or use the King County Metro Flex app or website if it's past 6:50 when you get there.
slide 3: This video is the aftermath of when I heard two entangled male Bald Eagles crashing through the trees, hitting the ground with a thud. Their talons are locked onto each other, and they can't get up. The manosphere is not okay.
slide 4: An eagle that is stunned by the consequences of his own actions.
slide 5: Two dumb, dirty eagles on the ground.
slide 6: A blue heron, sitting on a luxury SUV in Eastlake.
slide 7: That same blue heron, having taken a shit on that same luxury SUV.
slide 8: An insane *real* picture taken by Owen Deutsch of a Blue Heron and a Bald Eagle.

Violinist, composer and improviser Jackie An (they/them) was born and raised on the unceded land of the Pueblos (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and now resides on the ancestral lands of the Duwamish (Seattle, Washington). Their violin is fitted with a contact mic, turning the violin into a microphone that is actively listening for sound. The signal from the violin is channeled through guitar pedals plugged into an amp. The resonant frequencies create vibrations in the air that move any responsive membrane against mallet, wire, memory: The resulting auditory textures evoke subconscious imagery and stories for the audience to journey through.

[ID: Jackie An is seated in a dark void, playing the violin. They are a person of Korean descent with dark hair and eyes. They are wearing a light, neutral-colored shirt, and their dark pants are blending into the darkness of the background. The arm they are bowing the violin with is captured by the camera at multiple angles over and over, in a strobing effect.]

When we call for “freedom from the River to the Sea,” we call for a just peace for all people and land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.
For some of us, the phrase has always meant a beautiful aspiration for liberation. Some of us were brought up to fear it. All of us were drawn to this phase because of its simple and essential message: freedom must be collective and complete. The call for the liberation of all people is indispensable because no people are dispensable.
Read the meaning of “freedom from the River to the Sea” in the words of a few core organizers in the carousel or the comments!
