• W O O D F I R I N G • We recently fired our wood kiln for the first time this year. During the Woodfiring and Ash Glazes course with @cinimati , students fired the kiln twice and tested new tools: a custom ash blower made by a local welder and a wadding tool designed by student @alina_eine . They also collected ash from local olive groves to formulate their own glaze recipes.

This course gives you hands-on experience loading and firing a wood kiln (twice), plus a deep dive into ash glazes.
Our ceramics lead Mati will give you a solid intro to glaze chemistry and ash glazes, exploring East Asian traditions alongside experimental recipes using local materials. In the first firing you will test your glazes, while in the second one you will chase the results you want. All while learning how to fire a fast fire Olsen-type wood kiln: wadding, loading, controlling the curve…
It’s hands-on, experimental and pretty intense. Be ready to get covered in glaze splashes and carbon soot 🔥

Foraging wild clay on the beach, burning collected materials, mixing glazes, diving into theory and practice alike, two wood firings in just a week - without forgetting fresh cherries drive-in and a little ice cream treat here and there. Thank you Kalina, Irine and Kat for putting your heart and soul into this pyromaniac adventure! 🔥
