Mr Loverman is the adaptation of Bernadine Evaristo’s critically acclaimed 2013 novel, the 8 part BBC drama It’s a story about the consequences of not being true to yourself and the monumental implications of a lifetime living a lie. More specifically, it’s about a 74-year-old gay Londoner, Barrington Walker - originally from Antigua, who is a married father and grandfather, who has hid his sexuality his whole life. It’s a story about the end of a marriage. It’s the story previously untold about enduring black queer love in the windrush generation, of finding the courage to jump into the abyss and potentially loose everything in order to live an authentic life. Mr Loverman was a beautiful story to design for screen - touching on my own family narrative - elders I have grown up with, the long tentacles of British colonialism, racism and sodomy laws that have afflicted my own Caribbean heritage; it took me to Antigua first time, and it allowed me to collaborate with some of the most incredible artists both behind and in-front of the camera.
