I’ve never properly said hello on here, so… hi, I’m Chris. I have a bit of a love affair with saunas. It started when I was young, thanks to my Finnish aunt, long, slow evenings, heat, quiet, that feeling of stepping back out into the cold. It stayed with me. Later on, running (and eventually ultra running) became a big part of my life too, and saunas took on a different role, not just something I loved, but something I relied on for recovery, for stillness, and for that reset after pushing my limits.   Fast forward a few years (and quite a lot of time in meeting rooms), and in 2022, I left my corporate job and went off to see how other people do it - travelling, sweating, and finding some very special saunas in some very beautiful places. Somewhere along the way, it stopped being just curiosity. I realised I wanted to build something of my own. That path led me to Rupert McKelvie, founder of @out.of.the.valley . We clicked straight away - same pace, same ideas, and a shared respect for craft. For materials that age well, for details you only notice when you slow down, for building things that are made to be felt as much as seen. About a year later, I joined as a (slightly late) cofounder. We design and build handcrafted saunas from our studio in Devon, each one shaped by hand, and by the places they’re made for. More recently, I authored a book with @gestalten , filled with some of the most beautiful saunas around the world, many of which I’ve been lucky enough to visit.   It still feels slightly surreal that not that long ago my days were all boardrooms and laptops… and now, more often than not, they’re steam, timber, and cold water. These days I’m living down on the south coast of the UK, surrounded by one of the most inspiring, creative communities I’ve ever known, which, all things considered, feels like I’ve landed exactly where I’m meant to be.

Floating on the misty edge of Lake Derby in northeast Tasmania, this unassuming timber-framed sauna by Licht Architecture (@licht_architecture ) is deeply tethered to the region's wild rhythms. Approached via a winding forest path, the structure hovers gracefully above the water, clad in raw, site-specific larch and local hardwoods designed to weather naturally. Inside the softly slatted interior, a wood-burning stove anchors the elemental space while a single framed window transforms the surrounding tree line into a living canvas. @floatingsauna_lakederby Discover more about the world’s most striking contemporary saunas and their culture in our book 'Ridiculously Good-Looking Saunas', curated by @christopher.selman . Constructed by Slade’s building firm, ROC Built, the sauna pairs eucalyptus-gray corrugated exterior cladding with a warm, cedar-lined interior and a leafy courtyard housing two concrete pools to completely cocoon visitors. As a skylight naturally illuminates the space to accentuate the shifting textures of wood grain and steam, an understated combination of meticulous woodwork, subtle lighting, and a steadily radiating central stove helps bathers clear their minds. Providing a modest, tranquil retreat from Melbourne’s bustling arts and coffee culture, Inner Studio invites locals to sit, contemplate, chat, and simply enjoy the heat. At the foot of Mount Fuji, YU Momoeda’s elegantly designed public sauna, CYCL (@cycl_sauna ), takes its architectural cue from the floating "kasa clouds" that crown the famous summit. The two-story bathhouse creates a deliberate contrast of spatial experiences, guiding bathers from an introspective, dimly lit timber sauna below to an open tatami platform above offering sweeping views of the landscape. Balancing structural ingenuity with an intimately relaxed ambiance, the enchanting design utilizes robust cross-laminated timber to perfectly harmonize deep relaxation with the surrounding natural environment. Rising from the shores of Japan’s Naoshima Island like a hidden wonder, SAZAE is a spiral-shaped sauna designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates (@kkaa_official ) and TTNE (@ttne_official ) meticulously crafted from over 4,000 uniquely cut pieces of hinoki cypress. Inside this organic, shell-like structure, the warmly glowing wood curves seamlessly inward toward a central cast-iron hearth where light and air filter gently through narrow apertures along the uninterrupted benches. Functioning as both an elemental sculpture and a restorative shelter, every tactile line is carefully calibrated to listen to the surrounding coastal landscape, offering bathers a profound transition between heat, cold, and the natural world. Floating along the windswept coast of Sausalito, Fjord (@fjordfeel ) is a unique wellness sanctuary on pontoons conceived by co-founders Alex Yenni and Gabe Turner alongside architect Nick Polansky (@nwpolansky ) to transform the private rituals of the spa into an open, community invitation. Crafted from repurposed shipping containers clad in redwood and salvaged pontoons, the sauna's symmetrical design pays aesthetic homage to local maritime history while offering a highly practical, stable space to gather. Free from clocks and commercial signage, bathers sweat in the glass-framed, aspen-lined rooms before plunging directly off the deck into the bay, utilizing the rhythm of the waves to find a deeper connection to their natural surroundings. Anchored in Oslo’s harbor, Trosten (@oslobadstuforening ) is a striking public sauna designed by Estudio Herreros (@estudioherreros ) that reimagines civic architecture through its sharp-angled, recycled aluminum form. Beyond its gleaming green exterior, the structure offers a warm wood-paneled sanctuary and stands as Oslo’s first floating sauna to provide full universal access for all guests. Engineered from environmentally conscious materials, this sustainable landmark serves as a vital public refuge within the city's cultural fabric where visitors can gather and catch their breath.
