Next up: National Ice Cream Day lands on Sunday, July 20th, but you know we're about to blow it out the night before, too! GET JAZZED!
I was looking for a photo the other day and came across some old dance photos in Chicago - one that had my last dance bio attached from 2018ish. So, I thought it might be fun to share it with you so you can get to know who is making your ice cream better! 17 years condensed to 3 paragraphs, and a million lives lived between 2000 and 2021.
"Kristi has served as the Associate Director of BAM!, Chicago Human Rhythm Project's performance ensemble that began in 2004 under the direction of Lane Alexander, where she started as a founding company member. She performed for 13 seasons with Cartier Collective (formerly Especially Tap Chicago) under the direction of Julie Cartier. Kristi has been a tap coach for the national Broadway tour of "Billy Elliot: The Musical" (Chicago), and in 2012 performed at the Kennedy Center in their first full-length American tap concert. In 2006, she was chosen to work with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago founder, Lou Conte, on the re-creation of his tribute piece to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. She can be seen in the PBS documentary series "Dance in Chicago" highlighting Fayard Nicholas.
Kristi has been on the faculty at Rhythm World, the world's largest festival of tap and percussive dance, Tap on Barcelona, and the Reus Tap Festival. She has taught at Lou Conte School of Dance (home of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), the American Rhythm Center, the University of Chicago, as well as various Chicagoland studios. In 2012, she was a recipient of a Neighborhood Arts Program grant from the City of Chicago for her after-school work with low-income schools. She can also be found teaching master classes and workshops throughout the U.S.
Most recently, she premiered her work "Break Down Up" to critical acclaim as one of five female choreographers in Chicago chosen to create works for "Persist: Tap Dance Made by Women". In 2008, Kristi founded Dance Profusion Project, a dance festival fueled by a line up of Chicago artists in her native Oklahoma. In addition, she has produced two full-length concerts including some of Chicago's best rhythmic based companies. Kristi holds a B.S. in Health and Sport Sciences from the University of Oklahoma.

Non(ish)-ice cream related post:
All of this talk about art with the Tulsa Youth Symphony and the Cascia Hall Art II students got me puttin' my shoes back on this morning to "warm up" for the day.
This "step" is called a super shuffle. It's one of those things that when you first start to learn it you're like, "What the hell?". Breaking down that neuromuscular pathway is a challenge for sure. It requires you to get 3 sounds out of your toe tap in one movement. You practice the $#!+ out of it until you hit it, then you lose it, then you practice and hit it again, then again, then again, until the movement is in your body and, eventually, it just comes out - unless you have a lazy left foot like me, and then it just comes out whenever the hell it feels like it. 😀 It's super satisfying and fun once you conquer the challenge.
Art is a great teacher for and about life. Support it when you can. The Symphonic Sorbet flavor supports the @tulsayouthsymphony thru the end of May, and the @casciahall Art II ice cream exhibit will be up thru Mother's Day!
The @casciahall Art II students' works are now on display in the shop! Stop by thru May 10th to take a gander while you're noshing on some ice cream! Teacher: @arianajakub
Last Saturday, I had one of my favorite days at the shop so far this year. We had our first ever @tulsafarmersmarket vendor ice cream social!!
Let's get real - vending at the farmers' market is not for the faint of heart. It's early. Some vendors drive from hours away. Then, there's the physical task of unloading their haul and putting up the tents, standing in sweltering heat in the summer for hours, or in pouring rain, and loading it back up again. Not to mention, the actual act of farming and preparation.
These vendors go through A LOT of work and effort to bring you some of the freshest produce, baked goods, prepared foods, and crafts. Please visit the Tulsa Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 7-11a and Wednesdays from 8-11a. Admiral and Lewis. It's Oklahoma's largest market!
Speaking of the youth and arts....Cherry & Bark will be displaying ice cream-centered works from @casciahall art students.for a week! The exhibition will be available for viewing in the shop starting May 3rd. WE.LOVE ART!!!
This is Dawson. He is part of the @tulsayouthsymphony , and he won the naming contest that we do every year with his submitted flavor name, "Symphonic Sorbet"!
If you've been around, you know that TYS held space in my life for all 3 years of H.S. My dream at the time, was to play French Horn in a studio orchestra for movie soundtracks (you can still hear me blasting them when I work in the kitchen). The Tulsa Youth Symphony was the first opportunity that I got to experience what playing in an orchestra felt like. It was amazing.
When I moved back from being a performing artist in Chicago, one of the most important things to me was that the company gave back to non-profit, youth arts organizations. If you REALLY want to see me get fired up, get me into a discussion about the importance of the arts. I am very proud that since 2022 we have been able to contribute to scholarships for students to further their arts education with the Tulsa Youth Symphony. 50% of your purchase of the Symphonic Sorbet goes toward a scholarship. Thank you for your patronage that allows us to support the cause. It is much appreciated.
If you want to hear TYS in action, they are playing at 3p Sunday, May 3rd at the TCC VanTrease Performing Arts Center.
