Founded in 1989 in London by Marc Mac (of 4
Hero) and Gus Lawrence, Reinforced Records quickly established itself as one of the most influential forces in the evolution of UK breakbeat culture. Emerging at the height of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s rave explosion, the label became synonymous with innovation across hardcore, jungle, and drum and bass.
The label’s earliest releases were produced by
4 Hero, including the seminal track “Mr Kirk’s Nightmare,” which propelled Reinforced Records into the spotlight and helped define the darker, more complex direction of early jungle music. From the outset, the label distinguished itself through a forward-thinking approach to production, embracing cutting-edge studio techniques such as time-stretching and pitch-shifting-methods that would later become standard within the genre.
During the peak years of the UK rave scene, Reinforced maintained a prolific output, consistently pushing sonic boundaries. One of its most notable contributions was the Enforcers series—a run of picture disc EPs that served as a platform for more experimental material. These releases were not only musically adventurous but also visually striking, gaining recognition for their innovative artwork and design.
A key moment in the label’s history came with the introduction of Goldie, facilitated by his then-partner DJ Kemistry. Initially contributing as a visual artist, Goldie designed artwork for the label before transitioning into a central role in A&R. His creative influence soon extended into music production, marking his debut with the Rufige Cru project. Releases such as “Krisp Biscuit” and “Killer Muffin,” followed by the Darkrider EP, signaled the arrival of a major talent who would go on to shape the future of drum and bass.
Through its pioneering sound, visual identity, and cultivation of groundbreaking artists, Reinforced Records remains a cornerstone of UK independent labels, widely respected for its role in shaping jungle and drum and bass into globally recognized genres.
