It’s your last chance to see Nina Thomas’ work in our café bar. In The Broken Speaker, Nina works with captioning and silent film to explore speech, voice and silence, situating these within Deaf and disabled historical contexts. Throughout the work, she expands captioning both within and beyond the frame, and you’ll see the captions move onto our café bar walls. She’s chosen to caption breath and hesitation – elements often omitted in traditional captioning. Rather than treated as a failure of communication, they become meaningful in their own right. Breath occupies the space between us. Nina explores instances of uncertainty and interdependence in her work, and searches for moments of shared understanding. About the artist Nina Thomas is an artist; her work often explores captioning as a creative medium. Nina is profoundly deaf and has worked for many years to advocate for change in the cultural sector, working with cultural venues to improve accessibility. She was a trustee of the charity Stagetext, a founding member of The Film Bunch (a deaf and hard-of-hearing film organisation). As an artist, Nina has exhibited at venues such as LUX, British Ceramics Biennial, The Crypt Gallery (NW1), Liberty Festival 2022, Tate Exchange (Tate Modern, London) and OVADA (Oxford). 📷 @danweillphotography Dyma’ch cyfle olaf i weld gwaith Nina Thomas yn ein caffi bar. Yn The Broken Speaker, mae Nina’n gweithio gyda chapsiynau a ffilmiau mud fel ei chyfrwng i archwilio lleferydd, llais a thawelwch, gan osod y rhain mewn cyd-destunau hanesyddol Byddar ac anabl. Drwy ei gwaith, mae’n ehangu capsiynau yn y ffrâm a’r tu hwnt iddi; byddwch yn gweld y capsiynau’n symud i waliau’r caffi bar. Mae hi wedi dewis capsiynu anadlu ac oedi yn bwrpasol – elfennau sy’n aml yn cael eu gadael o gapsiynau traddodiadol – yn hytrach na’u trin fel methiant cyfathrebu, yma maen nhw’n dod yn ystyrlon yn eu rhinwedd eu hunain. Anadl yn llenwi’r gofod rhyngon ni. Mae Nina yn rhoi sylw i ansicrwydd a rhyngddibyniaeth yn ei gwaith, ac yn chwilio am eiliadau o gyd-ddealltwriaeth.

Creating for Wales’ arts & music scene is something that I feel most proud of as a freelancer ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 One project in particular has been rebranding Chapter Arts Centre’s Caffi & Bar - Chapter Eats. It always feels great popping into Chapter and spotting the team using the brand system and illustrations themselves for their promotional materials. Seeing something in action always feels truly fulfilling 🫶☕️ @chapter_eats @chapterartscentre Food and drink photography for Chapter taken by @http.margaux #chapterartscentre #welsharts #welshfreelance #welshartists

We’re making some changes to our opening hours This year we turn 55, and we want to thank you, our loyal audiences, neighbours and friends for your support – you’re the people who truly make us! As we look ahead to another vibrant year of exhibitions, performances, films and events, we also need to make some difficult decisions. This includes adjusting our opening hours. As a charity, we receive some funding from the Arts Council of Wales, but over 90% of our income comes from ticket sales, room hires, our café bar and donations. Like many arts venues and hospitality spaces, rising costs and changing audience habits mean we’ve had to make some changes to reduce our expenditure. Every visit, ticket, coffee or donation helps support our creative and community work, so we can look forward to seeing you at Chapter for many more years to come. Visit our website to find out more. ** Rydyn ni’n gwneud newidiadau i’n horiau agor Rydyn ni’n troi’n 55 oed eleni, a hoffem ddiolch i’n cynulleidfaoedd, ein cymdogion a’n cyfeillion – chi yw’r bobl sy’n ein cynnal ni! Wrth i ni edrych ymlaen at flwyddyn arall o arddangosfeydd, perfformiadau, ffilmiau a digwyddiadau, mae angen i ni hefyd wneud penderfyniadau anodd. Mae hyn yn cynnwys addasu ein horiau gweithredu. Fel elusen, rydyn ni’n cael rhywfaint o gyllid gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, ond mae dros 90% o’n hincwm yn dod o werthu tocynnau, llogi ystafelloedd, y caffi bar, a rhoddion. Fel llawer o leoliadau celfyddydol a lletygarwch, mae costau cynyddol a newid yn arferion cynulleidfaoedd yn golygu ein bod ni’n gwneud newidiadau yma. Mae pob ymweliad, tocyn, coffi a rhodd yn helpu i gefnogi ein gwaith creadigol a chymunedol, ac rydyn ni’n edrych ymlaen i’ch gweld chi yn Chapter am flynyddoedd lawer i ddod. Ewch i’n gwefan i ddysgu mwy.
