🏛️CERIDES proudly participated and actively contributed to the 🇨🇾🇪🇺 Cyprus #CY2026EU 3rd t High level Workshop on Fire Risks. 👥🤝🏛The European Commission (DG ECHO) and the Union for the Mediterranean co-organised this High-Level Workshop, within the framework of the PPRD Med Programme, building on the two previous editions held in Tunis (2024) and Barcelona (2025). 🔎👉The CY2026EU edition in Pafos focused operationally on fire risk management, addressing both wildfires (forest and bush fires) and industrial fire risks. Fire emergencies are increasingly more complex, posing multifaceted systemic challenges, thus requiring integrated, intersectoral and interdisciplinary approaches. 📚🗣Discussions address among others: integrated fire management, early detection via space-based and satellite services, fire monitoring, forecasting and decision-support AI and advanced analytics, and of course governance and interoperability frameworks. 🏛️🧑‍🚒🔥🛩️ The workshop highlights regional cooperation around the Cyprus Regional Aerial Firefighting Station (CRAFS), thus providing a platform for EU and non-EU Mediterranean partners, policymakers and experts, to deliberate and exchange views, opinions, experiences and lessons learned on strengthening operational cooperation across the disaster management cycle.

Almost nineteen years have passed since the devastating Indian Ocean #Tsunami, on December 26, 2004. Approximately 230,000 people were killed or are still missing while the impact on communities in South and South-East Asia has been enormous with widespread coastal destruction in #Bangladesh, #india, #indonesia, #malaysia, #Myanmar, #SriLanka, and #thailand – as well as 12 countries. Almost two decades after that horrifying day, on this year’s World Tsunami Awareness Day #WTAD2023, of 5 November, Asia’s coastal and island communities can look back and take pride in having rebuilt their ways of life and regional economies, but much still needs to be done elsewhere on the planet to achieve early warning services and greater preparedness. CERIDES @europeanunicy proudly joins #UNESCO’s #GetToHighGround campaign to raise awareness, which helps saving lives in such an event which in past centuries has impacted and in some cases destroyed coastal areas #cyprus too. @unesco #UNDRR United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) @europeancommission @eu_echo

Happening now at the Security Research Event #sre2023 held in Brussels. @cerides_coe Centre of Excellence in Risk & Decision Sciences @europeanunicy European University Cyprus is honored to participate at this high-level event with its Research Programmes Manager Ms Thalia Christou She had the opportunity to meet with POP-ART project partners, #ETRA as well as @policianacional representatives and discuss project progress and upcoming collaborations!! The event provides a valuable combination of insights for various aspects in the field of #SecurityResearch and #DisasterManagement. Speakers, amongst others, called for a more comprehensive policy framework in many domains and tailored made tools for enhancing resilience and interoperability. Preparedness measures should be No.1 to the agenda. Validated technologies, capacity building in emergency management and tabletop exercises in combination with enhanced interorganisation collaboration, should be prioritized for rendering organizations, critical infrastructures and communities more resilient! Also, its very important to highlight that our #meticos project is being presented at the event exhibition allowing stakeholders to try the METICOS solution and looking forward to the Final project event taking place tomorrow here in #Brussels! #H2020BESCluster #securityresearch

Today is international Disaster Risk Reduction Day #DRRday Why is this day so important? According to the #UNDRR the @unitednations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, by the year 2030, and that with the current climate projections, the world will face some 560 disasters per year. An additional estimated 37.6 million people will be living in conditions of extreme poverty due to the impacts of #climatechange and #disasters by 2030. Furthermore, with the “worst case” scenario of climate change, disasters will push an additional 100.7 million into poverty by 2030. Disaster risk grows with #poverty, #inequality and #discrimination We can curb the destructive power of #hazards - in other words, stop them from turning into #disasters - through careful and coordinated planning that is designed to reduce people’s exposure and vulnerability to harm. Greater investments are needed in the collection and use of disaggregated data, both to better understand disproportionate disaster. Let's all work together to raise awareness and help spread the message ! @europeancommission @euincy @europeanparliament @eu_echo @europeanunicy
