Thank you everyone for coming to the first edition of Crit Club with a live audience at @traumabarundkino . It was a blast. Next Crit Club will take place at @artbasel Hong Kong Conversations programme on 30 March. Crit Club is a performance where two speakers debate an unrealistic question about art. We are all used to the boring nature of panel discussions. No one says anything new, interesting or risky, no one wants to disagree with each other… or nothing changes after a panel discussion. Instead, I thought, what if we asked the speakers an unrealistic question? Can we create a thought experiment where both speakers can openly disagree with each other? How can we perform our art world roles in this tongue in cheek scenario? The art world is an inherently fundamentalist and sectarian space… polarisation is nothing new in the art world. How can we turn this performative disagreement into a space of agreement? There is a lineage of works that are inspired by the spirit of competition. For instance, there is a famous boxing match between Joseph Beuys and Abraham David Christian in Fridericianum in 1972. It’s called a “Boxing match for direct democracy.” There is also chess boxing which is a sport that was founded by the artist Iepe Rubingh in 2003. Chess boxing is now a real sport where athletes play alternating rounds of chess and boxing. Art was in the olympics as well. there was an official arts competition in the olympics until 1954. Not to mention Anne Imhof had a boxing match piece in a club in Frankfurt. There might be little direct competition in the art world but at the same time it would be too naive to say that the art world is not a competitive place. All of these examples illustrate different ways to be competitive in the arts where the spirit of competition elevates all of its participants.

My new series of Floor Pieces on view at @basel.social.club until Sunday The Floor Pieces are meant to imitate the linguistic landscape of art spaces and question the hegemony of signs that we assume to be neutral. Each sign puts the viewer in a different paradoxical situation.

Double Bind, my new performance format, premieres this week in Munich. Double Bind pairs two speakers from different professional fields around an overlapping theme. A firefighter and a banker on risk. A psychotherapist and a cryptographer on trust. An archaeologist and a novelist on narrative. A moderator asks them identical questions. While one speaker responds, the other wears headphones and can’t hear. The testimonies unfold in parallel, and only the audience has access to both. Behind the speakers, a live transcription and co-occurrence analysis visualises each speaker’s vocabulary, showing in real time where their accounts converge, diverge, or bypass each other entirely. The audience can follow the analytics on their phones during the performance. Afterwards, the headphones come off and the speakers take questions from the room. Upcoming Performances Double Bind: On Reality 15 May 2026 at @bayerischer_rundfunk Funkhaus, as part of @variousothersmunich Curated by @hannslennartwiesner Performance I, 16:00 Julia Barthel, Investigative Data Journalist, Bayerischer Rundfunk Helena Ernst, Freelance Conservator for Modern and Contemporary Art Performance II, 20:15 Prof. Dr. med. Art debate with a true battle spirit? Welcome to Crit Club, a rendition of a signature format by artist Cem A., the brain behind the cult Instagram profile @freeze_magazine . Crit club is a debate where participants are invited to step outside their usual roles (artist, curator, writer) and engage in roleplay scenarios that grapple with provocative, often absurd questions about art, expertise, and the conventions of art discourse. For its Ljubljana Art Weekend edition, Crit Club will take place in Sokolski dom Tabor, the city's iconic sports hall, accompanied by a fencing event that frames the discussion: Should Art Always Look Forward, Never Back? If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling through Instagram and nodding along to an art-political meme, then chances are you’ve already encountered the work of Cem A (@cem_____a ). The artist runs the account @freeze_magazine , an amusing, critique-filled home for “pretentious VIPs”. He also facilitates Crit Club, a discussion series launched in 2023 that blends debate with performative flair, creating spaces where ideas collide with unexpected intensity, humour, and just the right touch of chaos. Ocula’s Zian Chen (@zianchen7 ) spoke with Cem A following the publication of his recent article on “consensus aesthetics”, which probes how institutional pressures can dissolve public debate, and provides the perfect entry point for exploring his programme of dialogue and dissent. Read this conversation in full on Ocula Magazine. Images: 1.

Izložba Museum Yet to Be otvorena je do 15.3. U Dvorcu Petrovića i Perjaničkom domu, a kustoski tim čine Milica Bezmarević (MSUCG), Mišela Blanuša (MSU Beograd),i Jovanka Popova (MSU Skoplje).
