JUSTIN HICKS
feat. Jade Hicks & Kenita Miller
✨ CREATOR PLAN UPSTAIRS ✨
New album "Man Of Style"
Produced by Meshell Ndegeocello & Chris Bruce
JUSTIN HICKS puts his stamp on this Pharaoh Sanders classic by widening the vocal presence with the mesmerizing Kenita and Jade of The HawtPlates and adding a verse that creeps into the original melody and takes over. Hicks and The HawtPlates serve up “yeahs” with a certain wisdom and proffer “part of me is a man upstairs”

Today would be my paternal grandmother Millie’s 106th birthday. To this day the most evolved and expansive person I’ve ever known. She’s always been my guiding light. She was Black and German mixed. Beginning life as a mixed race child in 1920s America she gracefully persevered through experience and witness during highly charged times in this country. God Bless The Child was one of her favorite songs, and she even knew Billie Holiday who was a patron of the after hours bar Herb’s Lounge that Millie ran with my grandfather Herb in Chicago way back in the day. I always feel her with me. 🩵🙏🏾✨♓️

Rev. Jesse Jackson rest in peace 🙏🏾 Portrait by my late father Steve Clay circa 1988. The song We Got To Have Peace written by the inimitable Curtis Mayfield sung by the beautiful, generous and so alive Mavis Staples 🩵
10th anniversary of my Mom’s ascension today. This is her pregnant with me (yes she’s smoking, lol), accompanying my artist father at The Old Town Art Fair in Chicago 1966. That’s my dad’s Camaro she’s sitting next to. She loved Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic”. When my mom and her best friend Debbie decided to drive across the country from Chicago to LA she told me that was their song. I miss her so so much, but I am blessed to feel her with me in my heart and soul always. 🩵🌸🙏🏾

I think this is the oldest song on the album. I wrote it over 20 years ago on a broken guitar while watching Kenita sleep. It was definitely a moment. I think the song has traveled with me for so long and has been played so many ways, it’s nice to make this a duet and open the scope of its meaning. It is a bit of a hook-up song, but at the core speaks to the pleasure and pain of deep love and how that affects the way we make choices. This track features Kenita and I in a sultry unison vocal. I think her voice has a depth-meets-coloratura sound reminiscent of Stephanie Mills. Jake Sherman’s Fender Rhodes is reflexive and sweet. It all amounts to an anti-ballad momentum with lyrics that want to be sung into the ear of your lover. “I’m so tired but I gotta go faster”. »

Oh
Can we talk it out, over
Cuz you know my heart beats faster
Oh my god I’m stuck in the wrapper
Gotta keep blood pumpin’
So the time keeps freeing us and then I’ll
Oh
Oh my god
Can’t get to you yet, my hat’s on backward
Oh my god i’m stuck in the wrapper
You know I like it like that...
Oh oh my god
I appreciate the struggle with a grin
Oh
Oh my god
Holy mole’ and you’re slick like satin
Maybe I can sink Manhattan
Oh
Oh my god
I’m so tired but I gotta go faster
Maybe I can get you to go backward
You know I like it like that...
Oh oh my god
I appreciate the struggle with a grin
Oh my god I’m so in love
