The other day I stumbled upon some pics from my time living in Shanghai and Hong Kong in 2007/2008 (aged 21-22). Here’s the story: After studying abroad in Spain and Italy for a year during undergrad (my concentration was Spanish/Italian Lit), I got back to the US and had a really rough semester. I wasn’t ready to be home yet. So I applied for a fellowship, took a year off from college, and moved to Shanghai. On the back of my two years of academic Chinese, I enrolled in language classes at Fudan University. The fellowship paid for everything and eventually I stopped going to classes, got a job teaching English, moved into a high rise apartment, and started living my life. I met a long term ex there. I met some close friends. I travelled. I became an adult. After the school year I moved to Hong Kong for an internship for the summer before moving back to the US and finishing my senior year. My year abroad in China was the most formative year of my young life and set the stage for the adult I became. Finally took the time to look through pics from this summer (and maybe a few weeks after) and it was a good one to revisit: full of folks I care about and lovely music; also, lots of challenges and some solid wins. I’ve been settling down and settling in - working to be gentle with myself, while staying honest with myself. Here’s to more steady growth as the year closes out, more dance floors, more tender moments, more genuine smiles.

In the last week I’ve learned that you can grieve the loss of a space, a home. I’ve also heard such beautiful comments both online and irl from so many folks. I’m happy to know that this place and my love for it resonated. I’ve said what I needed to say but I thought y’all would enjoy (as much as I did) seeing a few of the memories. (My one regret is not having any pics or vids from the mushroom party. IYKYK 💡👽)

@djbone313 at @directtoearth was a whole vibe. Much respect to Detroit and those who paved the way for techno. This Frank Ocean edit was an important moment of catharsis after a long & emotional week. Bone is so intuitive on the decks that it felt like he picked up on my emotional need and played one of my favorite albums edited into my favorite genre. Here’s to Black music. Here’s to magical dance floor moments. Here’s to techno. Here’s to you 🖤
