“My practice is anchored by dance and movement with the intention to communicate ideas and concepts beyond words, transcending everyday language to speak universally.” Kristina Chan ( @chankristina ) ‘Uncoiling Veils of Illusion’ Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub ( @catapult_dance ) Video and edit by Samuel James ( @samueljames21 ) Nationally Renowned Choreographer Kristina Chan dissolves the boundaries between performer and audience in the immersive projection cube at MAP Mima ( @lakemacarts ) Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub has commissioned this new work where movement unfolds across the space, with company professional dancers Jacinta Durney ( @jacintalarosa ) and Jordan Bretherton ( @jrbretho96 ) embodying the fluidity, tension, and mystery of the inner self. The work is not merely observed but experienced. Every gesture, projection, and sonic texture is designed to evoke an intimate kinaesthetic dialogue between audience and performance, revealing the illusions we carry and the raw, untamed truths beneath them. Uncoiling Veils of Illusion invites witnesses to feel, reflect, and encounter the wild and ineffable parts of themselves and the world around them. Film Maker, Alex Brunton’s ( @alexbrunton ) 360-degree multi-channel projections envelop the audience in shifting landscapes that blur the line between the external environment and the landscapes of the mind. While James Hazel’s ( @para_opera_poor_opera ) hypnotic, undulating soundscape, ebbs and flows alongside the choreography and guides the audience toward states of deep listening, contemplation, and embodied awareness. CATAPULT Choreographic Hub is proudly supported by Creative Australia ( @creative.australia ) Create NSW ( @creatensw ) and Lake Mac Arts (@lakemacarts ). Without their support this work wouldn’t be possible. Thank you to everyone who came, watched and supported this incredible work. #contemporarydance #dance #newcreation #art #catapultdance

Behind the scenes of our filming day for Kristina Chan’s (@chankristina ) upcoming work ‘Uncoiling Veils of Illusion’ The work is not merely observed but experienced. Film Maker Alex Brunton’s ( @alexbrunton ) 360-degree multi-channel projections envelop the audience in shifting landscapes that blur the line between the external environment and the landscapes of the mind. Complementing this visual and corporeal language is James Hazel’s ( @para_opera_poor_opera ) hypnotic, undulating soundscape, which ebbs and flows alongside the choreography and guides the audience toward states of deep listening, contemplation, and embodied awareness. Catapult is thrilled to present Uncoiling the Veils of Illusion- a new immersive work by renowned choreographer @chankristina . Created for the 360-degree projection cube at MAP mima, the work surrounds audiences with moving imagery, sound and choreography, dissolving the boundaries between performer and spectator. Through choreography, multi-channel film projections by Alex Brunton and sound design by James Hazel, the performance invites audiences into a deep sensory experience exploring our relationship with nature and the subconscious. We are incredibly grateful to the Newcastle community who came out to experience Acquist at Civic Park. What an extraordinary turnout and such a powerful shared moment. Our deepest thanks to Catapult’s dancers and collaborators — Jordan Bretherton, Zoe Monohan, Remy Rochester, Kyle Ramboyong, Jacinta Durney and Zachary O’Donnell — who quite literally defied gravity, performing on a floating platform across all weather conditions. Such an exceptionally talented, brave and awe-inspiring cast of professional artists. Heartfelt thanks to Zackari Watt for his soaring voice and cinematic score, and to First Nations dancer and choreographer Zachary O’Donnell for his beautiful Acknowledgement to Country that grounded and opened each evening with such generosity and strength. A big thank you to Margel Hinder who’s incredible sculpture, fountain and artistic genius inspired the work. Thank you to @canvasevents — Sally Hill, Monica and Chloe for their incredible steering of the ship — to Lyndon Buckley for his extraordinary production leadership in all weather conditions, and to Fingers Crossed Collective for the remarkable floating platform. Gratitude also to Liz Kalaf and Ashley de Prazer for capturing the work so beautifully, and to our wonderful audiences — what a joy to share this experience with you. Acknowledgement to the City of Newcastle, Create NSW, Creative Australia and Newcastle Art Gallery for supporting Catapult to deliver this free event. It was deeply important to us to offer a professional contemporary dance experience that was accessible to everyone, especially in the current economic climate. Thanks again everyone - Cadi McCarthy - Artistic Director and Founder of Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub and Director/Creator of Acquist. Photo Credit: Liz Kalaf Photography @lizkalafphotography
