Episode 10 is now live: Cat Wall on the power of writing like a human🤖 I am so excited to share this conversation with the brilliant woman, the myth, the TOV behind the enigma that is @cat_wall Cat is the copywriting queen behind some of Australia’s most celebrated and distinct brand voices, from the D&AD-award-winning Dinner Ladies and viral underwear brand Nala, to the wine gods at Good Pair Days and Troye Sivan’s luxury homewares label, Tsu Lange Yor. If you’re trying to picture the vibe that goes with that soothing ASMR tone of voice you’re hearing, she’s basically the MTV character Daria and, even though nobody asked… I’d say I’m Fran Fine from The Nanny. So we balance each other out perfectly🥰 Cat and I connected through an email exchange that I initiated by asking her to come onto the pod. She told me I came across as a little unhinged. I told her she was correct. And here we are. In this episode, we get into how Cat made the rather unusual switch from designer to copywriter after a creative director encouraged her to “just give it a go.” We also go behind the scenes on Cat’s writing process - and yes, I asked her about twenty-one questions about it. Like why is it important to say the quiet thing we’re all feeling out loud? How do you still say it beautifully when you only have three to eight words? And how do you name a metre-long hotdog and write toilet product copy in the same eight hours without the brand voices blurring together? We tackle the age-old question every studio wrestles with: when is the right time to bring a writer into a project? And, of course, the AI-sized elephant in every writer’s room right now. Cat is truly one of a kind, and I’m so grateful she shared so openly in this episode. This one’s for every writer, creative, and anyone who’s ever felt like they have no idea what they’re doing. Cat gets it. And she’d say that human vulnerability might just be one of your greatest creative strengths Listen in the link in bio wherever you get your podcasts ✨

You were always weird but I never had to hold you by the edges like I do now.

For close to a decade I’ve thought that if John Hughes wrote a (undoubtedly problematic) coming-of-age film about my life, Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” would play in the scene when my swoopy-haired crush inevitably breaks my heart on prom night. The Jezabels’ “Disco Biscuit Love” has also briefly flittered in and out of the equation over time, but it’s now clear to me that they were both simply patient placeholders for FKA twigs’ “Cellophane”. Anyway, the two key takeaways here are, firstly, that it’s important to have deep, meaningful, pop music-based metrics by which to measure your personal growth and, secondly, this essay no one asked for is the reason I only ever allow myself 10 words for an Instagram caption.
