We often get folks asking us what we do and so we're starting this series called CanDance FAQs. Look out every week for a post answering a frequently asked question, or, if you can, head on over to our website and read them all.

Congratulations to our 2023-24 Creation Fund Artists: Travis Knights and Daina Ashbee. Travis and his team will create the Mars Project, which will blur the lines between tap choreography and music composition, and explore the use of harnesses to create the illusion of Martian gravity (which is 38% that of Earth’s gravity)! The presenting partners include: Fall for Dance North (Toronto); Danse Danse (Montreal); National Arts Centre (Ottawa); Dance Victoria (Victoria). Daina Ashbee will collaborate with Nicaraguan dancer, Bboy Giga (Juan Carlos) to create a new work entitled, We Learned a lot At Our Own Funeral. Daina is known for using simplistic, powerful, bold, movements and working with the body upside down and vertical. This work will continue to explore the shapes, textures and sounds of an upside-down body and the rhythms of breaking. The presenting partners include: Usine C (Montreal); Crimson Coast (Nanaimo); The Dance Centre (Vancouver); Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur (Saint-Sauveur). September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as we remember the indigenous families and communities impacted by the horrors of the residential school system. We commit to extending beyond remembrance into action. May our remembrance go beyond this day and spur us to consider the ways in which we go about our work of decolonizing, giving land back, and creating spaces for these systems of oppression to not repropagate. Please visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation to learn more @nctr_um #nationaldayoftruthandreconciliation #decolonization

“Nomada is a journey of the Creator of life through three worlds; Sky World, Underworld, and Earth. This journey must be made every year to maintain harmony of all the earthly and cosmological elements and to guarantee the harmony between Earth; Its nature, its flora, its fauna, its minerals, and humanity. All are connected and interdependent, by the animated lines of the collective spirit, through the Creator Mother and Earth. Nomada is the physical and spiritual act of renewal, affirmation, and restoration. Of the fragile continuous balance of the earth.” For Small Scale Creation Fund 2022-23 / Diana Lopez Photo by Greg Wong We are grateful for the support of @canada.council in making this project possible! #thecandancenetwork #art #canada #dance #candancenetwork #creationfundproject #dianalopez #commission #creationfund #arts #canadacouncilforarts

We are pleased to announce that Diana Lopez is the recipient of the CanDance Small Scale Creation Fund 2022-23 for "Nomada" Nomada is a production that brings together contemporary indigenous dance, aerial dance, installation art and three-dimensional light projections. Nomada is a journey inspired by personal stories of displacement, rituals of water, cycles of sustainability and the connections of our bodies to land. Nomada is a solo work exploring ritual as performance through aerial and contemporary indigenous dance, video projection, and art installation. Diana’s visceral movement initiates from connection to material, body memory and land. The fieldwork, concept research, and collaborative process are integral to the maturity of Nomada.
