Before it was brunch and bouquets, Mother’s Day was a protest.
In 1870, Julia Ward Howe penned the original Mother’s Day Proclamation, not a Hallmark holiday, but a cry for peace. She called on mothers everywhere to rise against the wars that were sending their sons to die. “Arise, then, women of this day… say firmly: We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies.”
Somewhere along the way it got softened into flowers and cards. We don’t hate flowers. But we think the original spirit deserves a nod.
Today at V, we’re honoring all of it… the mothers who held your hand on a trail and the mother figures who showed up without a biological reason to. And Mother Earth herself, who has been holding all of us the whole time, quietly, without a single thank you brunch. 🌎
To every form that mothering takes: we see you. We’re grateful for you. We wish you and all beings peace.
