This week I had the pleasure of leading an intense 3-day workshop with the UAD Photo-Video students in Cluj, hosted by @camera.cluj .
We spent the time working through ideas around photography as object, urban transformation, tech city imaginaries, and the image as material, cutting, bending, layering, adding supports, and slowly building a collective installation from fragments of the city.
Huge thanks to Irina from @camera.cluj for the invitation and to the students for their hard work, curiosity, and openness to experimentation. It was great to see how quickly the works developed, and I’m really curious to see how these processes might continue to shape their practices from here.
Today between 19-20 we are open to present the results of the workshop held by @vladimir.florentin with students from 2nd year ba from foto video department.

Cluj: Tech City / Urban Speculation Workshop
Organized by UAD Cluj – Photo Video Department, this 3-day workshop is led by artist Vladimir Florentin[Warped Space Archive/ DML] bringing together students to explore Cluj as a city shaped by its historical layers, tech expansion, real estate speculation, and platform economies.
Working with expanded photography, participants will move from field research to spatial construction, transforming images into objects and building a collective installation.
Hosted by UAD Cluj in collaboration with @camera.cluj

Anthropocene, mass extinction(s), skyrocketing AI, digitisation of knowledge and media, late
capitalism, exponential anxiety... At a time when humanity finds itself, for the first time in its
history, having to mourn in future tense, mourning those things that still exist but will not survive, is
it still time, useful or relevant to document our era? Is the compulsive, eclectic archivist a
hopeless dreamer whose approach is as futile as it is absurd, or indeed the true archaeologist of
the present day? As John Green wrote, ‘In the Anthropocene there are no disinterested
observers; there are only participants.’ The 2,000 objects gathered here were collected and
photographed in the streets of Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Vienna and Paris between December
2024 and March 2026. Were they lost, thrown away, forgotten? Are they all doomed to disappear
for good? What stories do they tell, and what do they tell us about ourselves? Born in France in
1979 and raised on three continents, translator and multimedia artist Pierre Baston has been
living and working in Cluj-Napoca since 2014. Storage Almost Full, for which he also created the
sound design, is his fourth solo exhibition.
