When it comes to creativity at Cal Poly, the sky is the limit — literally! 🌇 Earlier this year, twenty-two students from the Architecture (ARCH) and Architectural Engineering (ARCE) Departments, led by professors Thomas Fowler and Kevin Dong, collaborated with storied architecture firm @skidmoreowingsmerrill — which has designed buildings including @willistowerchicago , @one_wtc and @burjkhalifa — to create original designs for a skyscraper in San Francisco. 🏢🏗️ “It’s great to get feedback from such a high level,” architecture student Paige Delph said. “You think you’re all set, and then they give you a review, and you’re not set.” 📰 Catch the full story in Connections e-magazine, out now. Hosting over fifty companies in the largest event space ‪the City of San Luis Obispo‬ has to offer, Structural Forum is the premier student-led event in California, promoting industry connections within the field of structural engineering. 🏢🏗️ The highly anticipated, highly impacted event is brought together by the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) student chapters at Cal Poly. It’s their passion to advance as a community that ultimately connects them to the larger structural engineering profession, which, according to Ken O’Dell, alumnus of the program, will empower them throughout their careers. Finding one’s school-life balance as a CAED student is never easy. Long studio and lab hours, coupled with a rigorous curriculum and the trials and tribulations of college life, all make for a steep challenge. This holds doubly true for Lariel Henley and Chase Walter, who’ve added sports to the mix as members of Cal Poly’s Track and Field team. 🏃 🏋️‍♀️ 🏅 👟 📈 We recently sat down with them to discuss how they’ve balanced success throughout the year, both on and off the field. ⛰️ Poly Canyon epitomizes @calpoly ’s philosophy: Learn by Doing. Conceived as an Experimental Practices Laboratory by the founding dean of the CAED, George Hasslein, the scenic hills off Poly Canyon Road have long showcased students’ triumphs in design and structure. However, over the years, the preservation and upkeep of Poly Canyon have been challenging. Without the student caretaker program, which provided university presence and routine maintenance, the Canyon has been vulnerable to vandalism and waste. “I believe Glen Jackson [the first caretaker of the Canyon] living there helped preserve it,” said Robert Purdy, the @calpolycm alum behind the Techite Bridge. “It’s a really special place and worth preserving and perpetuating.” Thanks to an initial donation by @calpolyalumni , the college is working to reinstate the caretaker program, establishing a vibrant environment for student projects, competitions and studio work. 📽️ To watch the full video, visit the link in our bio!

Meet Misael Gonzalez Ramirez, our Great Grad from the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. 🦺🚧 “I think my biggest accomplishment at Cal Poly was the example I set for my siblings,” Gonzalez said. “I’m proud to demonstrate what’s possible through hard work and dedication. 🎭 Cue the student spotlight ✨ Josh Schneider is a third-year landscape architecture major with a minor in theater arts. Although incredibly passionate about his career in landscape architecture, he never lets his busy schedule prevent him from making time for musical theater. “I think there is a lot of overlap,” says Schneider. “As a designer... you have such a beautiful opportunity to elevate the stories of people and places that might not otherwise have their voices heard. And I think you’re doing a very similar thing in theater... there’s a really beautiful opportunity to tell stories and elevate voices and make sure people are heard and seen.” Schneider portrayed the scene-stealing Mr. Green in Cal Poly’s production of Clue: The Musical. The internationally popular game-turned-musical brought the world’s best-known suspects — enter Mr. Green — to Spanos Theatre, inviting audiences to help solve the mystery of Mr. Boddy’s death during its two-week run. Schneider’s on- and off-stage workload was quite demanding throughout. Despite this, he found success with the help of his community. “I am very grateful to have a really, really wonderful support system around me,” he says. “It’s such a wonderful reward at the end of every single day to be in a space full of people who love what they do and who are going to be there and create art with each other.” 🔦 To catch a behind-the-scenes look at Clue: The Musical, visit the link in our bio!

We recently welcomed Cal Poly SLO Construction Management students for a high-speed rail presentation and construction tour! @calpolycaed Tour sites included the Wasco Viaduct, Merced Ave. Grade Separation and a look at our railhead project! In honor of #ConstructionSafetyWeek, May 5-9, we’re highlighting this year’s V.E.S.T. Hackathon. 🦺🏗️ The goal: Through collaboration between construction workers, students, manufacturers and distributors, design PPE solutions that improve safety harnesses by addressing women’s safety experiences on project sites. During the two-day event, participants were able to: 💡 Better understand fall arrest and protection systems, including their accessories and requirements. 💡 Experience what it feels like to be suspended from harnesses. 💡 Develop the confidence to advocate for better-fitting PPE for themselves and their coworkers. 💡 Foster a safety mindset. 🔗 Visit the link in our bio to learn more and — if you were in attendance — complete two surveys to help create a safety database! 🚧📂
