What an amazing turnout at St Michael’s School! Mangrove Local Action Plan leaders Mandy and Clive finished the second year of the Tidal Wetlands Education Program strong, bringing together 115 students and the Madjaybana Rangers to teach and learn from each other about their local mangroves. The students loved learning about the Rangers’ work in weed and pest management and revegetation. It helped them make connections between the work the Rangers do and their own experiences fishing in the mangroves and seeing pigs on their farms. Thank you to the Madjaybana Rangers from Madjandji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC for joining the lesson! It was wonderful to see the students inspired by your team to look after Country even more. This project is Proudly supported by the Queensland Government—Engaging Science Grants and delivered in partnership with Earthwatch Australia and MangroveWatch. @mangrovewatch @earthwatch_aus @qldgov

This month Alex and Lucy from CAFNEC will be in Cooktown and Wujal Wujal to sit down and have some yarns with the community about the impacts of Cyclones Jasper and Narelle. Too often, the voices of people in remote communities go unheard. Elders and community members have reached out to us asking for our support to help share their stories, and we are keen to help by using our platform to share these experiences and be a part of helping them be heard, understood, and taken seriously. We’re creating a space for people to come together, speak openly, and talk about how these events have affected them and their families. 📍 Wujal Wujal – 27th May under the mango tree /share/1DdjAPwpCv/ 📍 Cooktown – 28th May under the tree of knowledge opposite the wharf /share/1BggNu7tVD/ If you’re nearby, we’d love you to come along and be part of the conversation. Please also share this post to help spread the word through the community.

Get your hands dirty for rainforest restoration! @rainforestrescueau are inviting the community to take part in their 2026 Annual Community Tree Planting Day this Saturday morning. Join volunteers, supporters and conservationists for a morning of planting, connection and hands-on action to help restore rainforest habitat in Far North Queensland. The event includes native tree planting, morning tea and a light vegetarian lunch, with all seedlings and equipment provided. Last year, Rainforest Rescue completed a decade of restoration at NightWings. This year, they begin their new restoration project at 110 Cape Tribulation Road, Lower Daintree, on the road towards the ferry, beginning an exciting new chapter in their long-running revegetation work. 🗓 Saturday 16 May 2026 ⏰ 9:00am–12:00pm 📍 110 Cape Tribulation Road, Lower Daintree

Following a series of shows in South Australia and Victoria, @tessa_devine has returned and is performing at the Move for Our Environment launch party fundraiser this Saturday! We love Tessa's brand of indy folk, it's always soulful, playful and hits you right in the feels! Her vocal range stirs so deeply, you can completely immerse yourself in her performances. Tessa has supported CAFNEC so much in the past 12 months, performing at Green Drinks, recruiting people for Move for Our Environment and participating in Move for Our Environment (running an insane 100km last September!!). What a weapon! Tickets are selling fast for this event, so we recommend you purchase your tickets online: link in bio

The Freshwater community has continued to organise and advocate against the approval given to property owners to chop down the incredible Raintree at 51 Old Smithfield Road, launching another legal challenge to protect the Freshwater Raintree in the Planning & Environment Court. On Friday 8 May, the Court confirmed the application is valid and can proceed. The community turned out, filling the public gallery at the hearing. This is about more than just one tree, across Cairns we have seen many significant the trees we share this land with being axed. The case is still in the early stages, so there is a long way to go. In unity, community members are taking on a huge and expensive legal fight to try and save this significant tree. We are incredibly lucky to have local people willing to stand up for the future of our neighbourhoods, our green spaces and our community character. 💚🌳 The Freshwater Raintree Action Group need support to cover the financial costs of the case. Every donation to the GoFundMe helps cover legal costs and keeps this fight alive. Donate today using the link in our bio
