We’re excited to share Café Arakil’s new visual identity — shaped by Armenian culture and rooted in solidarity, art, and creative expression. Café Arakil is our nest — a space to arrive, to gather, to think and feel together, and to resist. The scent of freshly brewed soorj [Armenian mocca], warm gata [գաթա - Armenian pastry], and tahinov hats [թահինով հաց - bread with tahin] fills the air - along with a deep desire to build spaces that connect rather than exclude. Arakil [արագիլ] means stork in Armenian — a symbol of return and belonging. Our new visual language reflects exactly that: warmth, conviction, and an open invitation to be part of something shared, where voices come together in collective strength. Am Samstag den 25.04. wollen wir mit euch zusammenkommen anlässlich des Genozidgedenktags. Das jährliche Gedenken trägt eine große Bedeutung, nicht nur in Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit, sondern auch im Hinblick auf unsere Gegenwart. Daher laden wir für ein Gedenken in Form einer Lesung und Musik, Trauern, Miteinander Lernen und Essen ein. Unser diesjähriger Fokus ist die Rolle von Deutschland. Aufgrund eurer Rückmeldung über das fehlende Wissen der Beteiligung Deutschlands an dem Genozid an den Assyer*innen, Pontosgriech*innen und Armenier*innen, übernehmen wir da, wo die staatliche Bildung versagt und veranstalten ein Panel zu diesem Thema. Da Genozide System haben, wollen wir aus der Isolation raus in Verbindung treten - mit Perspektiven vom Holocaust bis zum Genozid in Gaza sowie dem Genozid im Osmanischen Reich. Dazu sprechen werden Genoss*innen von @jewishbund , @fempalarchiv und weiteren. Über die Veranstaltung hinweg wird es einen Gedenkraum im Garten geben und die Möglichkeit sich dort zurückzuziehen, auszuatmen, zu trauern, zu beten. Außerdem gemeinsames Crafting von Vergiss-Mein-Nicht Blumen gestaltet von @armenischejugendberlin und ein Videoscreening von “Daugther of the crying man” von @countryofdust

CSN Lab’s Memory of the Body at @cafe_arakil in Berlin eng | հայ We are happy to share that you can now get a copy of CSN Lab’s research book «Memory of the Body: Analysing the Representation of the Body in Contemporary Armenian Culture and Art» in English translation. The book analyzes the artistic expressions of the body in Armenian contemporary art in cultural memory since independence. A limited number of copies have found their place in the library of Café Arakil, an Armenian café based in Berlin. Der Roman erzählt die Geschichte von Lilya und Vahe – zwei Kinder mit armenischen Wurzeln, die als junge Einwanderer in Deutschland aufeinandertreffen. Aus einer tiefen Freundschaft in der Kindheit wird eine schicksalhafte Wiederbegegnung in der Jugend – überschattet von einem traumatischen Ereignis aus der Vergangenheit. Die Geschichte ist eine emotionale Reise über Herkunft, Verlust, Freundschaft und die Kraft der Vergebung. Taline Magdalena, 1996 in Celle geboren, ist armenischer und assyrischer Herkunft. Sie lebt heute in Berlin und arbeitet als Pressereferentin. Der Junge mit den zwei Augen ist ihr erster Roman. Mit diesem Roman möchte Taline Magdalena nicht nur eine fesselnde Geschichte erzählen, sondern auch Themen wie Migration, kulturelle Identität und emotionale Traumata literarisch verarbeiten. 24 SEPTEMBER 2025 | FOOD&FOOTAGE | EMBODIED MEMORIES Variations on Armenian Contemporary Art with CSN Lab @csn_lab This edition of #FOODandFOOTAGE brings voices from Armenia exploring memory, bodies, and art as spaces of resistance and care. The evening unfolds around the new book Memory of the Body (CSN Lab, 2025), presented by its co-authors Arsen Abrahamyan @arsenique___ , Mariam Yeghiazaryan, and Tigran Amiryan @l_oriental . The book examines the reflection and (non-)representation of the body in contemporary Armenian art and culture, exploring how bodies carry social and political memory — from the Soviet body to the queer body, from the body of pleasure to the body wounded by war. Using diverse methods — from archival research to art criticism and cultural anthropology — the authors investigate the “bodiless” aspects of Armenian culture and the traces left in embodied memories of visual arts. Visual artists Amassia Niziblian @iamveribizi and lucine talalyan @lucinetalalyan share projects and stories that trace how feminist bodies remember what is erased from public space and media. Amassia will present the corpo-real project, exploring how the body bridges past and present, generations and memories. The program closes with lucine’s film postDiY — an intimate reflection on queer life and its resistance to brutality and patriarchy in post-socialist Armenia. Together, the presentations show how contemporary art becomes a multi-layered record of the past and a container of memory: from Soviet collapse to war, from repression to revolution, from decolonial practices to migration. An evening of sharing, remembering, and imagining futures. Armenian treats will be served by Café Arakil @cafe_arakil . CSN Lab is a Yerevan-based collective of researchers and cultural practitioners working at the intersection of memory and culture.
