L is for LEGACY. Composting is an investment in the future. The soil we build today supports the generations to come, creating lasting impact through healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and resilient local systems. This is the legacy of community composting: regeneration, rooted in care and carried forward together. 🌱 #RegenerativeFuture #LegacyBuilding #SoilStewardship #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek #ICAW

A is for ACCESS. Access to composting means access to healthy soil, green spaces, and fresh food. Community composting helps break down barriers, bringing resources, education, and opportunity into neighborhoods that have been historically underinvested. When composting is accessible, communities can thrive, environmentally, socially, and economically. 🌎 #EnvironmentalJustice #AccessForAll #CompostEquity #HealthyCommunities #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek ICAW

C is for COMMUNITY. Composting is more than a process, it’s a practice of connection. Across California, community composting sites are spaces of learning, collaboration, and care. Neighbors come together to build soil, share knowledge, and create something meaningful from what was once considered waste. This is what it looks like when climate solutions are led by the people. 🤝 #CommunityComposting #PeoplePowered #ClimateJustice #CommunityCare #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek ICAW

O is for ORGANIC CYCLES. Nothing in nature is wasted. Food scraps, yard trimmings, and organic materials are part of a living cycle—one that returns nutrients back to the soil instead of sending them to landfills where they create methane. Composting honors this cycle. It’s how we realign with natural systems and support healthier soil, ecosystems, and communities. What we return to the earth, returns to us. 🌿 #OrganicCycle #CompostLife #ClimateAction #SoilHealth #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek ICAW

We are honored to share that CACC has recently been awarded $2,068,734 in funding from CalRecycle to support the next cycle of Community Composting for Green Spaces (CCG-5). In March of this year, $2,758,312 became available from CalRecycle’s 2021-2022 fiscal budget, and they authorized the funds to be used for an extension of Community Composting for Greens Spaces (CCGS) - Cycle 2. CACC was invited to submit a proposal to extend our CCGS programming through 2028, and we were awarded funding for the next round - Cycle 5! LA Compost was also funded to assist with community composting sites specifically located in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties. This funding will allow CACC to continue to support community composting projects statewide, with a focus on providing benefits to historically underserved communities. Our program proposal included regional outreach plans about new CCG-5 project objectives, and our intent for collaboration with established CCGS community groups on the creation, improvement, or expansion of larger capacity compost hubs. The new participant eligibility requirements are listed in our post slides, and more detailed application instructions will be shared next week! Save the dates for our upcoming Q/A sessions on Monday, May 18 from noon-1pm and Thursday, May 21 from 5-6pm. Welcome back, folks. We can’t wait to get started again! @calrecycle @caclimateinvest @lacompost @cacompost @people.foodandlandfoundation #Believe #CommunityComposting #SoilIsLife #ClimateJustice #RegenerativeFuture California CircularEconomy EnvironmentalJustice Compost CommunityPower CapandInvest CAClimateInvestments “Community Composting for Green Spaces” is funded by a grant from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) through California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Invest dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in historically disadvantaged and low-income communities.

L is for LOCAL CAPACITY. Composting starts where we are, on our blocks, in our gardens, in shared spaces that bring people together. Local composting keeps resources in the community, turning food scraps into soil that nourishes the very places we live, gather, and grow. It’s a simple act with powerful ripple effects, supporting climate resilience, food systems, and community care. This is how change takes root: locally, collectively, and with intention. 🌱 #LocalComposting #KeepCompostLocal #CommunityPower #SoilIsLife #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek ICAW

It’s International Composting Awareness Week. 🌿 ICAW is the compost industry’s largest, most far-reaching education and awareness campaign, celebrated worldwide each year during the first full week of May. The mission is simple but powerful: bring people together to share the benefits of composting organics and using compost to build healthier soil. At the California Alliance for Community Composting, we see composting as more than a practice. It’s a way of life, to reconnect with the land, care for our communities, and transform systems from the ground up. Across California, community composting projects are turning food waste into living soil, building local resilience, and creating spaces rooted in learning, collaboration, and care. This week, we’re celebrating the people, the projects, and the power of composting to nourish both soil and community through the meaning of being L.O.C.A.L Local Organics Community Access Legacy 🌱 Stay with us as we highlight what it means to compost locally, equitably, and collectively. #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek #ICAW #SoilIsLife #ClimateJustice #RegenerativeFuture

More creativity and camaraderie from the 9th National Cultivating Community Composting Forum! #CCC26 Sometimes it seems like the venn diagram of composters and artists is just one big circle. Our evening reception kicked off with an open mic, featuring compost poetry, songs, and even juggling! And we finally answered the age old question — what if Bob Marley had written a song about composting? 🎶🪱 The next few nights attendees lucky enough to snag tickets to @tartar.biz 's compost clown show "Dirt Trip" were treated to a riotous performance blending humor and humus. If you were there, what emoji best captures the atmosphere of #ccc26? Comment below! ⬇️ Photo credit: Steven Springer of @rustbeltriders

One month ago, over 150 community composters and allies gathered in Sacramento for the 9th National Cultivating Community Composting Forum, hosted by @ilsr_org in partnership with @compostingcouncil and @ca4cc . Attendees dove dive into the ways community composting is a force of innovation in the broader composting industry, blazing the trail in everything from operations and outreach to holistic systems change. The Forum included a full day of panels, workshops, and presentations, accompanied by additional opportunities to connect at a compost art gallery, service project, and even an open mic! Gathering Ground: Celebration of Compost, Art, and Culture Last day to view the exhibit: Wednesday, Feb 4th, 12–5pm It was a joy to show my photographs and paintings, and to witness other artists share their love of compost. I loved the compost rap and the way it was shot. I loved the compilation of trash pulled from compost sites. I loved the worm femme with her long nails. I loved the compost piles inhabiting the room. I loved the compost coffin, the shrines, the sanctuaries. I loved that compost could be loved in all of these ways. And unexpectedly, it made me love compost in another way, too. Compost Art Gallery by @ca4cc , hosted at @flowerfistmarket . Photos printed by MetroPrint in downtown Sacramento. Funding for my largest photo canvas prints provided by the #CreativeGrowthFellowship. All proceeds from purchases will go toward #SaveCoyoteCreek. All of this arriving right on time, as the largest and sold-out compost conference gathers this week at the SAFE Convention Center, Compost Conference 2026. By @compostingcouncil
