Analogue brute force. Digital tidying up. Steve Reich as rhythm generator. The best remix either of them has ever heard…and shoes. Andy Bell (GLOK) and Timothy Clerkin interviewed each other for R$N. Read on site now 🔗 A handful of extra 7”s from Alliance remixed now up on Bytes Bandcamp for Bandcamp Friday!

Just found out the sad news that Tim Wright died in April last year. He was a phenomenal electronic producer/musician, who made some of my favourite records in the 90s/00s, recording as Germ for GPR, Tube Jerk (Eight is an all-timer), Sand (an experimental post-rock collective) and under his own name, where he mashed together 2-step beats and techno on a couple of awesome 12s for Novamute. I met Tim through Sean Mayo at PIAS (who ran the great iLL Recordings) and had the privilege of hanging out with him a few times, including when he played live at Turnmills back in the day. He looked more like a maths teacher than a purveyor of banging techno, but he melted a few minds that night with an absolutely corking set. I lost touch with him years ago, but he went on to be an Associate Lecturer in Music and Sound Recording at the University of York, passing on his knowledge, skills and wisdom to the next generation as Dr Tim Wright. They have paid tribute to him online. If you’ve not listened to his music before, you are in for a treat. The album Fold by Tube Jerk is a great place to start. His music will live on. Love to everyone who knew him. RIP Tim. x

Cliff Workshop is the Edinburgh-based composer Euan Dalgarno’s first release for Bytes; a spellbinding set of experimental electronics, austere modern classical, blustery shoegaze textures and orchestral post-rock. Euan talks to @thisisransomnote about the album in an exclusive interview available to read now. Album is out on May 15, available to pre-order on Bandcamp. Link in bio.

Bytes is delighted to announce its first release with the Scottish electronic composer @euandalgarno , who has previously recorded for labels including Modern Obscure Music and Frosti. Bytes and Dalgarno have been sharing mutually appreciative correspondence for a few years now, waiting for the right moment to work together. Cliff Workshop was the perfect fit with the Bytes ethos — a spellbinding collection of experimental electronics, austere modern classical, blustery shoegaze textures and orchestral post-rock. Available to pre-order now on a super limited edition cassette (Bandcamp only) and digitally in all the usual places. Link in bio! ‘Catterline’ is the first single, featuring spoken word from @shanleyinglis . Cover painting by @emmafraserart Cliff Workshop was written in the Spring of 2025, while the Edinburgh-based musician was recovering after an accident. This period of healing has given the album a stronger emotional pull than his previous releases, with moments of stupefying beauty. Try listening to ‘Rockethaus’ or ‘White Moth’ without welling up. The music drifts between calm, Eno-like textures and sudden bursts of distorted guitar and dense sound, “which felt natural to where my head was at back then,” says Dalgarno. “Writing these eight tracks became a kind of safe space for me while my body was recovering. When I listen to them now, instead of taking me back to those darker months, the songs feel reassuring — like something quietly reminding me that things are okay, and that nothing bad ever really happened.”

The @tomsharkett remixing of Nothing Ever is here! He taps into the melancholy at the heart of this wayward pop banger, making Du Blonde’s vocal seem even more doleful, underpinned by his collection of stupendous vintage synthesisers. Click link in bio for details! Xx

I wrote a piece for @thisisransomnote on how I made my latest album Almadies and the influence of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell on the music - you can also listen to some stems and sounds in isolation as I highlight the thin lines between real sounds and synthesis. For our first release of 2026, Bytes is revisiting Alliance, the impeccable 2024 collaboration between GLOK and Timothy Clerkin. Along for the ride are an impressive cohort of musical talent — bdrmm, Richard Sen, Tom Sharkett (WH Lung), Legowelt, Xylitol (Planet Mu), FROID DUB and Clerkin — who all deliver exceptional interpretations of the tracks. Alliance Remixed is announced for pre-order today with a remix of ‘AmigA’ from nu-gaze heroes bdrmm. Bandcamp pre-orders also include ‘The Empyrean Hour’, Tim’s cheeky booty of ‘Empyrean’ and ‘The Witching Hour’. All Bandcamp orders of the limited edition green vinyl include an exclusive white label 7” in a black disco bag featuring the Timothy Clerkin remixes, which aren’t included on the LP. There are only 180 LP/7” sets. The original LP (minus the 7”) can be purchased from UK indie stores and via Forced Exposure in the US. I’ll put half up now and the rest later today so everyone gets a fair chance. Please don’t buy multiple copies to flip. The album out on February 27, 2026, when all Bandcamp vinyl orders will ship.
