We had such a fantastic week of programming last week between our Digital Defense 101 and Meshtastic workshops! There was a fantastic turnout for both. Dylan of @diskettepress even made us zines to hand out along our mesh devices and @knurl.ing printed us cases! Primarily used by hikers in remote areas or in environmental disaster scenarios, Meshtastic has been gaining popularity with DIY enthusiasts and those who recognize the value of having options when the systems we rely on go offline. We invite you to come strengthen your communication network by joining the mesh across the city of Detroit and beyond! We will be providing free device kits to the first 7 pairs of friends who register together, because it’s way more fun when you can send messages to your bff! You are welcome to bring your own device, whether that means purchasing a new one or bringing one you already own. We will be covering new device set-up and Lo-Ra radio basics—no experience required! Our next meeting is May 6, and this is a special one because the Detroit Digital Defense Collective is joining us to teach their Digital Defense 101 workshop! We’ll do our usual announcements and then get right into it, so bring a computer if you’d like to join along! (BULK has a number of computers to borrow if you need one.) 🗣️ According to DDDC 🗣️ “This workshop will cover best practices for increasing individual and community resilience when using digital devices, to defend against political repression, corporate extraction and threats to privacy more generally. We will go through device settings and talk about recent examples of the criminalization of political organizing and free speech.
