BFS Creative Leadership Programming – Day 1 at Washington Leadership Academy @wlapcs
Day 1 was a powerful start. The Fashion & Design team joined the Podcast/Radio crew for a collaborative session that blended creativity, style, and storytelling. Students asked thoughtful questions about personal aesthetics, cultural inspiration, and how fashion influences confidence behind the mic.
This cross-program exchange set the tone for what Creative Leadership is all about—students learning from one another, sharing perspectives, and building community through the arts.
Built From Scratch proudly partnered with 1818 Legacy Project to support the Center City Alumni Toy Drive led by Jayvon McFadden at the Center City Makerspace.
In addition to delivering toys for the drive, we brought members of our Creative Leadership Program from Washington Leadership Academy for an immersive tour of the space. Students had the opportunity to explore, ask thoughtful questions, and gain firsthand insight into creative innovation and community-driven work.
The day was a complete success—giving back through service while opening doors to inspiration, learning, and future possibility.

Rev. Jesse Jackson was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and rose from humble beginnings in the segregated South to become one of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history. Mentored by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he became a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement, dedicating his life to economic justice, political empowerment, and equal opportunity for Black Americans.
Three major accomplishments define his legacy:
1️⃣ Founding Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) to advance economic empowerment and corporate accountability for Black communities.
2️⃣ Establishing the Rainbow Coalition, building multiracial political alliances focused on social justice and voter engagement.
3️⃣ Making history with his groundbreaking presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988, where he expanded the national political conversation and inspired millions to participate in the democratic process.

DM Kihn shared insights on all things education—from opportunities for DC students to the future of learning—while students practiced real-world communication and leadership skills.
