One week each year, the whole team at @isteconnects + @officialascd participates in a Teacher Shadow where we spend a “day in the life” of an educator by following them throughout a typical day. This initiative gives us a chance to develop empathy for the realities and challenges educators face today and allows us to gain a deeper understanding of what effective learning looks like.
This year I had the opportunity to shadow the amazing @smmendoza123 , principal at @bertrandavenuees in Los Angeles and also one of our ISTE+ASCD board members. Her day was non-stop, starting with student arrival, a parent meeting, then classroom visits, engaging with students, teacher coaching, helping manage recess and lunch, addressing school staffing needs, and planning for their academic goals for the rest of the year.
Each time I have an opportunity to shadow an educator I am reminded how amazing our teachers and leaders are. It’s also a reminder to me how much impact leaders like Ms. Mendoza have on their community beyond the walls of their school. A principal’s day moves FAST – they need trusted, tested, practical support to help them be successful. As always I walk away re-committed to making sure ISTE+ASCD is doing everything in our power to help educators create the kind of school experience that transforms students’ lives.
ISTE and ASCD are officially bringing our communities together, and that means this ASCD Instagram page will transition to @ISTEconnects on March 10.

I’m excited to announce our new three-year partnership with @google to prepare teachers to use AI in ways that support effective teaching. This initiative will be available to six million K-12 teachers and higher education faculty across the United States. We want to ensure all educators have the foundational AI skills required to model effective use of AI for their students.
