“A fuller assessment of Cannes today, and its role in the cinema ecosystem, requires a consideration of the festival selections alongside developments and trends captured by the accompanying Marché du Film.” With Cannes (@festivaldecannes ) kicking off tonight, Scott Macaulay (@bugjack ) offers an industry preview of this year’s festival: the market trends, the anticipated acquisitions, the festival’s uneasy entanglement with social media and A.I, and more. We are excited to announce THE SPACESUIT, the latest film written and directed by multi award-winning filmmaker Kitty Green (The Assistant, The Royal Hotel, Casting JonBenet), starring Academy Award-nominated, and BAFTA-winning actress Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman, Fantastic Four: First Steps, Mission: Impossible franchise, The Crown [TV]) and Emmy Award-nominee Lewis Pullman (The Testament of Ann Lee, Thunderbolts*, Lessons in Chemistry [TV], Top Gun: Maverick). The story follows an astronaut (Kirby) who is forced to make an impossible decision after an incident with her co-pilot (Pullman) leaves an indelible stain on the mission in the days leading up to lift off, setting off a tense race against the clock. According to the filmmakers, the film expands on the same themes as Green’s earlier films while “dialling up both the stakes and scale.” Click the link in our bio to read the full article 🔗 #TheSpacesuit #VanessaKirby #LewisPullman #KittyGreen #Cannes

And that’s a wrap on my trip to @iffr ! What an amazing festival. I saw one short film and seven features at the fest and four more features on the plane … now that I’m a parent that’s more movies that I see in a year :) I was so touched that a half dozen friends made the trek to Rotterdam just to see me and reconnect after several years in most cases! Combining them with several old friends showing films and a handful of new friends gave us a really interesting, fun, creative and exciting crew. It made for late nights and early mornings and lots of walking in the grey and drizzle… but it was also such an open, welcoming festival full of films that really were surprising, fresh, and less mainstream (and more independent) than I usually see at major events. It was inspiring! And thank you to #AlexCox for making the film that brought me here… and thank you to International Film Fest Rotterdam for including #DeadSouls! Now for my inevitable airline delays through the Bermuda triangle of airports (Chicago O’Hare). And up at 4:00 am tomorrow for my commute to work! Back to day jobs you know. But Rotterdam- you are now the city of laughter to me - thank you friends for a handful of days I won’t forget. I’ll try to tag you all but I’m sure I’ll forget someone’s instagram handle! But let me add- when I do come back it will not be connecting through @ordairport on @united - quite possibly the worst run airport I’ve ever been in. Hours of delays both to Rotterdam and home … they’ve also lost my luggage. Truly made the trip over 20 hours each way and unpleasant ( but hey you just have to figure what to change on the first trip, right!) STRINDLER!!!

Had a wonderful few days in Rotterdam with my agent Hamish Duff @first_artists_management for the world premiere of dark comedy ‘The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford’ at @iffr starring Peter Mullan, Gayle Rankin, Jakob Oftebro and Jonathan Hyde. It’ll always be an emotional feeling to hear my music play out in a cinema, and this particular project has been a very special and creatively rich collaboration with the freedom to use all the musical skills I physically possess, from my recorder playing childhood to now. 🎵 I also got to work with @alexander.painter again on one special song within the film, featuring his lovely vocals supporting those of Jonathan Hyde @jonathanhydeofficial - a ✨ moment for sure. Cannot wait to share the music with you all this year. So grateful to work with such a generous and kind core team; Writer and Director, Seàn Dunn, Editor Shakti Bhagchandani, producers Alex Polunin @anipolunin1 and Scott Macaulay @bugjack - whose warmth and enthusiasm was so infectious. Shout out to assistant editors Elizabeth Clutterbuck and Phill Skokos @abovesatisfactory and mixer Ben Baird. Also great to finally meet Kristen Irving at @bbcfilmofficial Leslie Finlay @screenscots and to reconnect with @miabays of @britishfilminstitute after over a decade. 👀 The UK Premiere takes place at Glasgow Film festival @glasgowfilmfest on 4 March. UK release details TBC. Photos courtesy of @abovesatisfactory and Hamish Duff @first_artists_management 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🥁 🎵

Scott Macaulay asked Sophia and Keisha to enter back into manifesto mode. They obliged, just a little bit softer and wiser. A little bit. Thanks Scott! Thanks as well to @viridianammarin for images from their incredible work with @sa.ci.mu 🩶 @bugjack @hophiasaid @solidarity.media.network

So proud to share this piece in Filmmaker Magazine [ @filmmakermag ], in Scott Macaulay’s final issue as Editor-in-Chief, out now online and in print. Scott curated a beautiful Reflections section and invited me to write this essay. For this piece, I enlisted Kendra Terry, PhD [ @kgmt ] in conversation to take a first stab at exploring the parallels between my dual practice of filmmaking and psychoanalysis. Thank you to Scott [ @bugjack ], Kendra, and also Lily Meyersohn’s [ @lily.hart__ ] additional editing eyes. /132755-film-and-psychoanalysis/

To celebrate Scott Macaulay’s (@bugjack ) incredible run at @filmmakermag I have to speak about the coolest thing he let me do there while I was his managing editor at the mag. We knew we could get Michel Gondry for our Winter 2008 issue so after seeing the movie he had coming out, BE KIND REWIND, I suggested to Scott, “let’s drape him in VHS tape!” (In the movie Jack Black and Mos Def play friends who remake movies with their camcorder). To Scott’s credit, he was never against an ambitious idea. So I went to a local Radio Shack and bought all the VHS tapes they had, broke all them apart so we just had a trash bag full of tape. Then the great photographer @richardkoek crafted one of my all-time favorite covers Filmmaker ever did. It wouldn’t have been possible without Scott’s leadership and passion for indie film.

Tomorrow is Scott Macaulay’s last day at @filmmakermag . I’ve been in denial about him leaving. I guess this post is my first step out of that stage of grief. Scott has been nothing but supportive of this podcast since I first pitched him the idea, and he has never questioned any of my decisions about guests or the no-nonsense style of the interviews, or had any issues with the weirdness of the host or anything! Every time I’ve checked in with him about how the show is going, he was all love and green lights. I can’t express how important that kind support was to me. I would not have been able to do this show without it. Let’s not even touch on how important this man and his work with Filmmaker Magazine has been to independent film. I would need all day and much more space for words than they allow here. All of us indie filmmakers need to tip our hat to him today. Let’s hope his legacy will live on in the magazine. One thing I know for sure. There would be no BACK TO ONE podcast without Scott Macaulay. The thanks are endless, Scott!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
