ATHERTON HOUSE BY MARK ENGLISH ARCHITECTS Shortlisted: Luxury Residence - Global Award for The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026 Atherton is a substantial family residence designed for a professional couple and their two teenage children, conceived as a place of comfort, amenity, and delight. Created by Mark English Architects, the project reflects a thoughtful response to both the clients’ international experience and their new chapter in California. Having previously designed homes in Singapore and Hong Kong, the clients brought a clear and informed brief, seeking a residence that would embrace its Californian context while supporting their evolving family dynamic. Set against the tranquil banks of the Pawcatuck River, Riverhouse by WORKac is a masterful study in tactile materiality and environmental performance. The exterior is defined by a dramatic, sky-blue metal roof that folds over the façade, creating a diagonal ridgeline that mirrors the surrounding horizon. Elevated to meet floodplain requirements, the home sits lightly on the land, acting as a vibrant, net-zero vessel for daily life. Inside, the sensory experience is curated through a balance of raw and refined textures: unfinished plywood clads the volumes, while "flower pot" colored window frames and handmade Lebanese tiles provide rhythmic pops of saturation. Every detail, from the Petra Blaisse-designed curtains to the central MOS Architects dining table, reinforces the home’s role as a site for conversation and generative living. via #urdesignmag architects @work.ac images @brucedamonte #WORKac #PassiveHouse #RhodeIsland #SustainableLiving #NetZero #ModernInterior #EcologicalDesign #NewArchitecture #ResponsiveDesign #TactileSpace

The window placement strategy for this bathroom was driven by three performance criteria: privacy from neighboring properties, balanced natural light distribution across the ceiling, and visual connection to the tree canopy. The result is a space where natural light moves across surfaces without exposing daily routines to everyone outside. This Woodside home started as an elevator installation and became a foundation-up overhaul. We removed the barriers that had fragmented daily life for three decades. The new plan opens sight lines through the main floor, brings natural light into every corner, and transforms narrow passageways into generous, connected spaces that flow toward the valley views. From foundation up, we reimagined this 80s-built home into an age-in-place sanctuary where wood tones warm expansive views and gathering spaces. Photo by @brucedamonte #ArchitecturalRenovation #ModernArchitecture #AgeInPlaceDesign #CaliforniaLiving #HartWrightArchitects

We're very excited that the New York Times (@nytimes ) has featured our Crane Cove Warehouse in the Sunday Design section titled “Office Retreats Without Leaving the Office.” Located in a former modular-home warehouse, this renovation walked the tightrope of honoring and preserving the history of the industrial space while introducing new, strange, tactile micro-environments. It was a fun project with an imaginative client and flexible project team. Link to the article in our bio Photos by @brucedamonte Article by @morozy

The crowning experience of @alisondamonte and my hat trick of stays at lodgings by architects @mackaylyonssweetapple in #novascotia came at their seminal Shobac “settlement”. What made it even more special was being able to sit in our cabin and chat with Brian Mackay-Lyons about the project and its history. An unforgettable experience! @shobacns #farm #architecture

My favorite view from the recent assignment I had of a story by Steven Holl and Eric Keune on Paffard Keatinge-Clay’s student center at SF State for Domus Magazine. Featured in this view are the Pyramid of Sound (right) and the Pyramid of Silence (left), which is aligned on the axis of the North Star! @domusweb @stevenhollarchitects @erkitekt @pkc.architect @sanfranciscostate #1970s #architecture

I loved how this #midcenturymodern gem by #williamcody steps down as you move through the house and garden creating a sense of overlapping layers and volumes. A mix of sculptural resin artworks by masters like #PeterAlexander and contemporary artist @gisela_colon_ and collectible furniture were beautifully curated by @PeterBlakeGallery making the house a highlight of our recent trip to #PalmSprings. #CodyHouse #architecture #landscapearchitecture

The one major work of contemporary modern architecture I saw in Mérida was the Palacio de la Música Mexicana with its undulating slatted screen in the fashion of the inside of a piano. It’s Spanish Colonial setting makes for a compelling visual and historic dialogue. @palaciodelamusicacnmm #modernarchitecture #merida #mexico Architects: @amedina.co @arqcarlosquesnel @munoz.arquitectos @reyesrios_larrain
