I’d never have expected that this year I would be doing my first ever musical… And it would be CHICAGO! 😆 And here we are. What an experience this has all been - definitely not without its challenges but wow, I am so grateful to have had this opportunity… and honoured to be sharing the stage with such beautiful, kind & talented humans. To the cast, management, crew, and everyone involved, it’s been so spectacular to work with all of you. “We gave the artists a pair of shoes and told them to just dala. That’s what MAMOQ is about. We’re not going to give you a theme and we’re not going to give you an outline. You need to do what you need to do.” “If it’s a minimal design, cool. If it’s a hectic, flamboyant design, do it. Just MAMOQ it.” The VERVE team has been wanting to branch out to the fringe of the Cape Town culture, so when a B-voting event came across our feed we were immediately interested. When trying to find out who was behind the event though, all we found was @graassiecpt , and a mysterious feed named @whatismamoq . We reached out for a conversation and ended up meeting @broncraddock and @yaaseencader , co-founders of MAMOQ, who told us their story and the story behind the MENSE event - an event curated to subvert the expectations and pretentiousness of the culture, and go back the roots of who we are. Taking it back to Autoplay… This was probably one of the most, if not THE most, challenging seasons I’ve ever done. On a physical level my body was pushed to limits I never knew existed, my mental stamina reached new geometry, and the emotional investment was taxing but even more so, fascinating. If you didn’t get a chance to see it last year, you have to go watch them at the end of this month. @darkroomcontemporary pushes systemic boundaries and challenges the agency of manipulation in our society in a way that almost feels too unique to be seen, like a secret that shouldn’t be told.
