....a Tex-Mexican and a Czechxican are having tea and talking about a possible photo shoot. On the coffee-table, Xiamara Chupaflor has placed a red ace glossy p0rn playing card next to a tarot deck and a burnt-down 7-day candle for “Abre Camino.” She describes her vision for a photograph, posing as “Abre Camino,” a kitsch homage to spirit that keeps her and her community on a path towards abundance. I leave and begin work on a simple set that feels like some collage of magical Vegas peep-show and Coney Island fortune teller. At the shoot, Koko Barrios provided the hair, make-up, and direction that transformed the fantasy into a seductive reality. Xiamara draws a spread from her deck and begins to envision a whole series….
a year later, five photographs materialized with New Orleans-based workers, all centering the intersections of s3x work and spirituality with freaky flair. With the SOLOS residency, we had the opportunity to present art by and for s3x workers that celebrate consensual workers’ autonomy and perseverance; we would “create a temple in under a month,” as Xiamara said. The photos are further adorned by Chupaflor's expansively beautiful altar work
if you’re in the Bulbancha/New Orleans area anytime now until September 25th, we invite you to "come in ritual celebration of culture bearers living and thriving on the margins.” Bring your offerings of abundance: dollars and coins, petals and pleasers. Sit a spell and take in every detail. Free to LA residents on Sundays. All money left on altars will be donated to local SW.

Let me introduce you to a world of Douglas Bourgeois. Set in the swamp of South Louisiana director a.r. havel recreates our favorite portrait of New Orleans Queen of Soul, Irma Thomas. A huge influence to me I’m honored to portray her countenance. The toasters in the fridge and all the furniture’s outside with the mosquitoes. And I’ll never complain unless to sigh about the one I’m waiting for. Watch Two of Hearts on youtube and stream any way you like ♥️♥️

everybody knows the only reason to make art is to post about it // so here's proof, to all the unbelievers and future grant committees, that I am serious and prolific. but, I might not tell the NEA (should they exist) that one collaborator is my boyfriend, and the other tore her meniscus during the performance. but hey, we all know you can't make good art without trauma.

Choreographer spotlight! a.r. havel is a multidisciplinary artist working in stage-craft, dance, photography, and film. His current research uses 8mm films to explore queer temporality as theorized by José Esteban Muñoz and Elizabeth Freeman by playfully investigating nostalgia and why queer people are so obsessed with archives. See his newest work on August 30! Tickets at link in bio.
there is perhaps nothing Richard Moszka would make fun of more than a sappy memorial social media post.
I would hear him at his sprawling work table, the exasperated and only slightly queeny eye roll of "oh my god!" And I'd feign interest as I tip toed down the marble steps of the oh-so-deco staircase, to the kitchen or out the door onto Jalapa, but there is no escape: He's going to talk. And he's going to ask for your point of view; but he can't leave it simply at that. Every opinion is a science experiment with extremely fragile variables.
I just want a concha, Richard. Por fa-fucking-vor.
Obsession came easy to Richard. Whether it was punk culture, queerness, faggotry, or his wax poetics on drugs and addiction; but with me, he returned constantly to trying to figure out why that one residency in tlaxcala went so wrong. Night after blended mango-vodka-coconut water night, he would hold me hostage with a knife laid over an unpeeled onion as he dissected every possible outcome; and I'd say: "If you don't start chopping that onion immediately, I'm going to leave."
You needed to have something to do in two hours when Richard called. Every sentence was a whole class in underground art history, cultural theory, linguistics and the political ethics of translation.
I'm not being sappy, Richard. Okay ~ ill tell them about the nights at Sodome and Pervert. I'm not about to angelize you. You: the kind of lunatic who shows up to a working-through-whiteness workshop wearing vampire contact lenses that made your irises disappear. And that high pitch Miss Doubtfire voice you did anytime you did something you thought was "proper." "They're so whiny! Full of shame!" about the girls in NA.
I will miss you, Moszka. You had a power you didn't weild as power. It was connection, and your home was old world Roma still.
