This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re proud to announce @bandofbuilders_ as our official charity partner for the 2026 Brick Awards. In construction, pressures can build quietly - long hours, physical demands, financial stress and time away from loved ones. Too often, mental health is something people feel they have to carry alone. Band of Builders is helping to change that. Through practical projects, financial aid and wellbeing support, they provide vital help to those across our industry when it’s needed most, supporting not just individuals, but their families too. Their work is a powerful reminder that looking after mental health is just as important as physical safety on site. By partnering together, we hope to raise awareness, break down stigma and contribute to a more supportive construction community. Because no one in our industry should feel like they have to struggle alone. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #BandOfBuilders #ConstructionCommunity #WellbeingInConstruction #BrickAwards50 #BDA

The future of construction is #BetterWithBrick. Clay brick has long played a role in durable, adaptable construction. When assessed across its full lifecycle, from extraction and manufacture through to decades of service life, recovery and reuse, brick can support circular construction principles. 🧱 Its durability, reuse potential, and recyclability mean clay brick can continue delivering value beyond a building’s original purpose, including reclamation for reuse and processing into recycled aggregate. ♻️ Explore the role of brick in circular construction in our latest guide (Link in the comments!) #BetterWithBrick #CircularEconomy #UKConstruction #Retrofit #Reuse #Recycle #Reclaim

How do you achieve Section 7 Silver Level standards without over-relying on bolt-on renewables? The Ravenscraig development in Greenock provides the answer through technical rigour and a high-performance building envelope. By using Blockleys Sterling Grey clay brick and bespoke thermal modelling, the project team successfully engineered out heat loss at the construction junctions. Key Specs: Fabric-First: Bespoke modelling to mitigate linear thermal bridging. 🏠 Materiality: UK clay brick specified for a 150-year service life. 🧱 Compliance: 15% carbon abatement through optimised structural performance. ✅ Technical precision meets long-term durability. Restoring the Past, Building the Future 🧱 Battersea Power Station and Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings stand as prime examples of how industrial heritage can be successfully revitalised through thoughtful adaptive reuse. 🏗️ By prioritising the restoration of existing clay brick structures, developers significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with demolition and the carbon-intensive production of new materials. This approach allows architects to modernise historic spaces, integrating essential thermal upgrades and energy-efficient systems necessary to meet Net Zero performance standards. 🌿 Explore the practicalities and benefits of industrial repurposing in our guide: https://ow.ly/IMbC50YWvYv #BetterWithBrick #Retrofit #Sustainability #NetZero #Architecture #Reuse #Recycle #Reclaim #CircularPrinciples

In the UK, clay brick is often recognised for its longevity, with many structures of standing in excess of 150 years. While durability is only one part of the sustainability picture, it plays an important role in reducing the need for replacement and supporting long-term resource efficiency. Rather than reaching a "final" destination, clay bricks are are part of a continuous cycle. They can be carefully recovered for reuse, repurposed as reclaimed units, or processed into high-quality recycled aggregate for new infrastructure. Their inherent durability and composition enables this transition from one project to the next. How does brick masonry support long-term resource management? Longevity: Minimising the need for frequent demolition and reducing the demand for new materials. Recyclability: Supporting secondary applications such as road sub-bases and landscaping. Reusability: The technical potential for deconstruction and reclamation. Design flexibility is not just an aesthetic choice, it is a technical requirement. As we conclude this month's design considerations series, we reflect on the core strengths that keep clay brick at the forefront of the UK built environment: Permanence, Precision and Performance. • Material Stability: Fired clay is colour-fast and weather-resistant, ensuring façades retain their integrity without fading over time. • Technical Precision: From special-shaped clay bricks that resolve complex junctions to adaptable brick slips systems meeting tight tolerances. • Fire Safety: Inherently non-combustible (A1 rated), supporting high-specification performance across the building envelope. • Visual Versatility: A rich palette of colours, bonds and textures complete architectural control - from heritage restoration to contemporary design. The façade is the most enduring element of any project. Specifying clay brick means selecting a material that combines structural integrity with the technical adaptability needed to deliver complex architectural designs.
