āPerhaps the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company.ā

My Magical Muses @yeesanloh + @be.bodymind
In September, I was invited to accompany my mom and some of her oldest best friends to spend the week at a lake house in Oneida NY.
I was part chaperone, part dog sitter, part private chef, part activities coordinator, part DJ, part tech wizard for this reunion. But of course I brought my camera so we could do a photoshoot while the women were together.
They had all seen the many photos I had taken of my mom and my mom came up with this concept using her collection of vintage aprons and head scarves. These are all women in their 70ās and I watched them play dress up, cram into a tiny bathroom and do each otherās make up, fuss over hair and skirts and rouge. Giggle and dance and make funny faces in the mirror. It was an experience like seeing them back in time 50 years when they were all college-aged and rearing babies and smoking joints and having jam sessions on the roof. When they were edgy and raw and riddled with heartbreak and passion. And they still are - 50 years later.
I knew all these women (and two more who couldnāt make it this time) since I was a baby; they were all my aunties, familiar and trusted bosoms, women I looked up to and was confused by, women who I saw struggle and thrive, through love and loss, adventure and misadventure. Women who watched me and my sister and their kids grow up go through all the same things. Women who have seen me.
Hereās to the Oneida Gals ā many more stories to be told. I love you all.
Rita, Louisa, Rosa, Mo⦠and for the two that couldnāt be there that week, Alice and Nancy in absentia. You are all a part of me.

āAn artistās legacy is not just a body of work; it is the archaeology of their lives and of life itself.ā
- Stewart Stafford
To enter the innards of an artistās home, to be given a tour of their process, their inspiration, and, perhaps as well, their experiments ā is to feel the work breathe and remember. Nothing happens in a vacuum and yet we constantly view art works apart from their creators. But their creation story is always much deeper and more complicated ā interwoven with failures and dreams and heartbreak and bliss. The search for immortality of concept and peace of vision. The decades of research and humble beginnings. Where this work grew, that is the ultimate creative space. And what an honor and bleating joy to enter it.
Thank you to Vincent and Donna ā¦and Kline!

She is
a poem.
She is an old one, a new one,
one waiting to be written.
She is.

Sierra became one of our forever muses during Covid lockdown. Her indefatigable sense of play and adventure mixed with her natural ability to transform within the scenes we created with her make her a pure joy to photograph.

Inspired by the glum housewife glamour of Rosalyn in American Hustle, a little shag goes a long way with a slow drag on a fag while on the rag.

Porch Pop-Up Portrait Studio ā early this summer we had a garage sale and I created a mini photobooth on our stoop for anyone who wanted to jump in. The faces of these fine folks who found themselves unexpectedly enjoying themselves in front of the camera made my day. This is one of the many reasons I love what I do for work, for a living, for my soul.
First time shooting analogue film in quite a long time and playing with in-camera double exposure on top of it!
