Borderline Art Space is pleased to present on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM, the exhibition Estranged from Nature by artist Ioan Sbârciu, one of the most important painters in Romania. Curated by the international curator of Romanian origin Maria Rus Bojan, the exhibition in Iași represents the second episode of this endeavor, initially presented as an adjacent project of the Venice Biennale. Here, a new selection of works belonging to the same generic theme will be presented.
On the occasion of the opening of this exhibition, the premiere launch of the catalog Natura Înstrăinată* will take place, edited by Maria Rus Bojan and published by Idea Artă și Societate publishing house, Cluj, 2026. The catalog contains texts signed by philosopher Aurel Codoban, poet Ion Mureșan, and curator Maria Rus Bojan.

The series of exhibitions and debates In the Shadow of the Flag: Dialogues for Democracy opens on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, at 2/3 Galeria in Bucharest, with the exhibition Tissues of Belonging, the first chapter of a project that brings together artists and theorists in a shared reflection on how national symbols, identity imaginaries, and new forms of populism are reconfiguring public space today.
‘There is no trap as the identity trap - one might say after reflecting upon the obsesive periodical return to the question of belonging.
The past 40 years, particularly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the post-colonial theory heights, and the spread of neoliberal ideas into society, have been marked by the rework of the concepts of identity - from the fluidity of global movements accelerated in the 90s, to the ossification into ontological categories of the years 2020s, passing through the crystallization of identity as opposition to political ideologies - and propositions.
This exhibition, that open a series of worldwide shows, groups internationally acclaimed artists and their meditation on symbols of belonging; most prominently, but not only, flags. Colours and forms, usually on the material support of a textile generate a form of external tissue of political identity and emotional belonging to which many organically relate. The exhibition invite one to extract meaning from the reinterpretation of such symbols of appurtenance, as if operating an open heart/ open emotions surgery with the scope of clinically investigate one’s tissues of belonging.’ (Alec Bălășescu)

In her series World of Details, Viktoria Binschtok combines views of New York from Google Street View with close-ups she has taken on-site as a means to confront the automated images of the Google universe with her own subjective impressions of the same urban reality. The exhibition is organized by Borderline Art Space through the AltIași Cultural Association and is part of the "Flows & sediments" project, co-financed by AFCN. În acest video, artista Claudia Retegan prezintă lucrarea „Can't see the Forest For the Trees”, care deschide expoziția „Un asfințit mai puțin ca perfectul”. Proiectul reunește fotografii realizate între 2013–2024 și explorează modul în care percepem și interpretăm imaginile atunci când sensul lor nu este imediat evident.

Pe 1 decembrie 2015, acum exact 10 ani, s-a deschis Borderline Art Space. Porniți dintr-un garaj care dădea într-un demisol, astăzi suntem într-un white cube la baza Copoului, după 84 de expoziții la care au participat peste 200 de artiști. Revenim asupra acestui parcurs printr-o retrospectivă aniversară, cu vernisaj miercuri, 3 decembrie, ora 18, unde cei prezenți primesc catalogului expozițiilor din 2025.
