Seeking a peaceful retreat for his family, the designer and founder of @boldtstudio repurposed an old pontoon boat into something extraordinary. By adding a compact, cedar-clad sauna, @thesaunafloatboat came to life—a floating sanctuary for relaxation.

Recent work with and for the superstars at @heyroost . Their newest location, Roost Fairfield, is set to open on Monday in a busy strip mall on the Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield, CT between a T-Mobile and an Italian food market. We worked to create a space that would transport guests to the rustic country dining rooms and kitchens that inspire their food. Check it out if you’re ever passing through.

Spring thaw! An update on the Taconic house project.
We’re scooting past the half way point, putting final touches on the 2nd and 3rd floors before we dive into the work on the ground level. The original 18th c. wood flooring there paitiently awaits some tender love and affection.
Can’t overstate the joy that has come from the process of dreaming, designing, and tweaking details alongside our mama bear, @vic_twah . Her architecture-speak may need some work 😜, but I must admit that her insights are consistently spot-on.

Notes on a construction detail (for the nerds 🙌)
When we removed the bathroom and an abandoned brick chimney flue from the middle of the third floor, we found an opportunity to improve the small existing skylight that provided access to the roof, without replacing it.
With Northwood Construction, we worked around existing structural conditions to reframe the roof. We enlarged the light well, tapered it along the wall, and lined it with metal foil to bounce and reflect light down into the house.
We’re excited about the result. Sunlight streaks the wall in the common room at the top of the stairs during the day. Moonlight sneaks into the same room at night when the lights go off.
A tribute to the kids 💛
Taking a minute to document the chaos and joy of living through this renovation with four little champions, to whom this project started as “just some old house.”
Weekend outings to see slabs of stone (“We’re spending our Saturday looking at rocks?”). A Monday morning jackhammer alarm clock in the room below. Dinners with paint-decks and parents more focused on finding the “right white” than passing the pasta. Six beds on the floor in one cramped room with a 10-month old who spontaneously erupts into laughter in the middle of the night and wakes everyone up. A midnight splinter the size of a tooth pick.
WHAT IS THIS, we keep asking ourselves. But the fab four are rolling with the punches and setting the standard, reminding us that sometimes you gotta be strong, sometimes you gotta dance on the dining room table. Everything’ll work out fine. We’re going to the end of the line!

Start with a good foundation, they say. So we’re tightening up the 1792 original, and giving it lots of love and attention to ensure that it can keep going for another 230 years.
Work begins in the basement, where removing the concrete slab and plaster walls reveals the glorious loose-stone foundation and hand-hewn beams that have held this place together since the early days of George Washington’s second term. From there, the Northwood Construction team finds its groove—digging out two feet of earth and New England bedrock (gotta love it), building the bench foundation, laying the plumbing, and pouring a new concrete floor.
Next up: framing the downstairs suite and warming up before we take the work upstairs.
