We had a great session with the Creative Youth Council on Saturday experimenting with Suminagashi.
Also known as Japanese Paper Marbling, Suminagashi consists of dropping inks onto the surface of water, swirling them to create patterns, then placing paper or fabric onto the water to pick up the ink pattern.
Following a demonstration by Artist Samsam, the CYC experimented with their own patterns, and even discovered suminagashi could be done in puddles of water 🌧
Once dried, the CYC were left with their own one-of-a-kind marbled paper prints that they'll be turning into their own personalised sketchbooks in the March and April sessions.
Programmed as part of Engage's Let's Create Art 2026, you can find out more about what's on for the rest of February at engage.org/happenings/lets-create-art.

The Weight of Rain
Unframed, digital print of ink drawing, 59.4 x 84.1 cm, 2025. Limited Edition. Purchase via my website, link in bio!
Around and within a sticky sky,
birds tuck low as clouds fold and flap.
Pushing down, the blues grow heavy,
thigh to thigh, the giants wrap.
Hot skin shivers at rain’s first kiss,
sweat undone, the ground grows thick.
Each breath caught between the blows,
each strike a pulse, a fevered lick.
Then slowing, scattered seeds sink deep,
the storm exhales, its fury spent.
The sky reclines on the earth’s broad chest,
listening close to his breath’s content.

Some beautiful books from this term’s course on sustainable bookbinding. We’ve been making book cloth, composing scrap and hard back binding our perfect bound and soft back books. Super amazing to see the variation in their work this term at @morleyprintandbook
Some beautiful work from my students today at Morley. We have been making our own book cloth and making hardbacks for our section sewn and perfect bound books. Really lovely seeing how different each book has been developing.

✨Very excited to share the album artwork for ‘These Things Take Time’. This was a collaboration with my dear friend @samsampetherbridge . We spent a very sweet day together listening to the album, discussing, playing with ideas, exploring different colour palettes, trying out many versions to find something that really captured the energy of this project. And here it is!✨
It was made through a process called Suminagashi, meaning “floating ink”, which is an ancient Japanese art form that originated over 1,000 years ago. It involves carefully dropping ink onto the surface of water, then gently manipulating it to create flowing, marbled patterns, which are transferred onto paper or fabric. It was a real joy to work together on this and I couldn’t be happier with the final artwork.
Will share some more photos and videos of the process of making it soon…
The sound is a snippet here of the first track to be released, on 5th Sept, with another dear friend @lauraemisch on sax 🙏
The full album ‘These Things Take Time’ will be released on 26th September on @e2e8records
Spent a beautiful time in the Lake District with my partner @tim_boxall . We drew and printed portraits of each other using both soft and hard ground techniques as a practice, here’s a look at the results!

Tim and I recently took a trip to the Lake District, both craving long walks, time to draw, and space to print. We were lucky to come across the incredible @marketplaceprintstudio studio, run by Jack @jackfawdrytatham and Emily @emilyfairliebaker in Cockermouth.
We wandered up and down gorges, discovered caves in the slate hills, and walked among towering trees, some fallen, their massive roots exposed. It felt like a mini residency and an adventure all in one, fuelled by many boiled eggs and homemade sandwiches.
In the studio, we learned new printmaking techniques with Jack, like pepper pot aquatint, and fiddly ways to adjust our plates. The space welcomes locals to pop in, watch, and learn a little about printmaking, everything I ever hoped a studio could be. It’s deeply inspired me to one day hold a space like that myself.
If you’re ever looking for a creative getaway, a place to learn printmaking or continue your own practice, I couldn’t recommend this spot more.
There’s still so much from this trip I haven’t shared like drawings, lakes, prints, so stay tuned. I’ll also be selling a few prints from this adventure. If this little glimpse has caught your eye, feel free to message me (framed and unframed). A more formal post about that coming soon!
