📚The first week of the two weeks training saw us learn on ‘Reporting in the age of AI’ while the second week was the first ever Reporting Simulation held in Europe.
🔭It was intensive learning from the best and reenacting real life scenarios in the world in a safe environment.

In 2023, I was selected as one of the 15 participants in the CNN Global South Climate Storytelling Programme by CNN Academy, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. I produced and directed a video documentary on Desertification and its impacts on food insecurity, women and girls, and youth, among other key areas. Travelling to some of the most remote parts of Nigeria’s desert regions.

🌍All over the world there is an ongoing battle against desert encroachment from the Sahara Desert stretching across Africa down to the Great Victorian Desert in Australia.
🇳🇬Nigeria is no exception, with over 60% of its land, comprising 15 out of 36 states, affected by desert encroachment. ⭐️This documentary made during my time at @cnn Academy ( @rockefellerfdn cohort) showcases the far-reaching adverse impacts in the frontline states of Northern Nigeria, touching on the themes of food security, gender inequality, displacement, insurgency, climate education, reforestation, and people’s hopes for the future through the lenses of women, farmers, and youth.
The 2025 observance shines a light on how restoring nature’s foundation—land—can create jobs, boost food and water security, support climate action and build economic resilience.

How is Africa being represented in global media, and how has that conversation evolved?
I am pleased to share a paper I recently co-authored with Dr. John Aliu titled, “Mapping Africa’s Representation in Global Media: A Bibliometric Analysis (2010–2025).”
This paper explores how scholarly research has examined Africa’s portrayal in global media over the past 15 years. It contributes to a clearer understanding of how this discourse shapes global narratives about Africa, and why diverse, locally grounded perspectives matter now more than ever.

🔍 Key insights:
• Research output is growing rapidly (+11% annually).
• The United States, South Africa, and the United Kingdom dominate knowledge production with increasing participation from other regions.
• International collaborations are increasing but remain uneven.
📌 The field is currently shaped by five core themes:
• Conflict and crisis reporting
• Social identity and inequality
• Media framing and discourse
• Geopolitics and regional narratives
• Migration and representation
🚨 One major shift:
Research is moving away from one-dimensional, crisis-focused portrayals toward more nuanced conversations about identity, power, and global media systems.
📌 Why this matters:
Media narratives influence global perception, policy, and engagement with Africa and its people so understanding who produces these narratives and how is critical.
💡 There’s still work to do, especially around digital media and amplifying African-centred perspectives.
