@creativereview have announced the winners of their prestigious Annual Awards 2025 and.. we won! The Atelier Edition of @lauracannellmusic @legoldston 's The Deer Are Small And The Rabbits Are Big won the Award for Packaging Design The Edition features a run of 50 handmade sleeves, screen printed on site, with a vellum-finish outer printed with white ink. The 51st copy comes inside a hand-engraved, bespoke plaster casing shaped like a 2-part plaster mould, as if the record has been cast inside. The case acts as both protector and creator of the record. CHELSEA WOLFE - DUSK 7” lathe cut We are big fans and it has been incredible to create the 7” lathe cuts for Chelsea's new single DUSK. "For the lead-up to our single “Dusk” we mailed out a limited number of lathe-cut 7” records with the new song to a few fans. Each piece came with a unique QR code linking to a secret website. Each scan added a new fragment of glass to the site, until the glass egg from the artwork was made whole again, unlocking a preview of “Dusk” before it was released. Thanks to all who participated!” — @cchelseawwolfe The 7” features the track DUSK on the A-side with lyrics from the track mechanically engraved in a circle “CRACKED AND FRACTURED HELD ANEW AND WHOLE AGAIN”. The B-side is entirely covered with a direct on-body print. Their HeLiX23 cutter head is trusted by SST in Berlin. This means that the full process — from the master you supply to the record you receive — is managed by people who have been mastering audio and cutting vinyl for over two decades. Limited to 100 hand numbered copies, it will be available exclusively this Friday through @heavenslathe and will not be released across DSP's. If you want to hear it, you have to own it.

Introducing the cutting stylus - the unsung hero of our craft, where excellence begins with the quality of the groove. We’ve recently seen “frankenstyli” appear on the UK market & want to reassure our customers that we do not allow these anywhere near our lathe. Here’s what is required by our supplier, @myshank_diamonds (MS), to create a professional-quality diamond stylus. 📸 1 & 2 is the difference between an uncut 💎 & the final cut & polished stylus. 📸 3 shows perfect geometry. 📸 4 shows the stylus ready for installation. 📸 5 demonstrates the correct way the heating wire must be wound. 📸 6 is the inspection tool used to detect defects. 📸 7 & 8 show a “frankenstylus”: 📸 7 shows serrated edges & poor angle geometry (out by 9° !!) of a new stylus. 📸 8 shows badly wound heating wire around the base of the diamond. The heating system isn’t just there to get hot; it must deliver stable, even & responsive thermal energy to the cutting edge. This depends heavily on how the wire is wrapped & bonded. Sell this quality as a sapphire stylus to the professional disc mastering industry & you’d be blacklisted. It should not be acceptable in our industry either. Is it easy to make 💎 styli? MS have spent 10 years building the expertise required to achieve the results shown in 📸 1–5. “Professional” is no visible damage at 7000x magnification under an electron microscope & no surface scratches after polishing. The equipment investment is around €400k. Their cheapest microscope is €25k (they have three). The Nomarski microscope used for DIC checking (Differential Interference Contrast — critical for assessing 💎 quality) is €55k. They also use a Mitutoyo microscope for real-time inspection & edge damage checks. MS works to 0.1° angle tolerances & 100 nanometre size precision. This level of accuracy is critical: MS manufactures DMM tools for many pressing plants <- the importance of this cannot be overstated. We benefit from this precision: all machining is done by the same expert using the same tools. Those are the aesthetic benefits. The sonic benefits compared to the old generation of ‘plastic sheets cut into circles’ is enormous: They require a shallower cutting angle and have an increased surface rigidity. The shallower cutting angle minimises mechanical distortion and enables greater modulation amplitude within the groove. This enhances groove precision and definition, resulting in better separation and clearer highs (more precise stylus tracking). The noise floor is as quiet as a lacquer. Not only better looking, but better sounding. Better for the environment too. The pressed blanks use 100% safe colour pigments, and are 100% recyclable containing no PVC or PETG additives. The pressing production process produces no harmful dust or fumes and is therefore safe for the operators. It is a closed-loop no waste manufacturing process.
