I never went to university, but I joke that I’ve been attending the School of Rock instead. This “campus” has endless classes at every level, each one preparing you for the next. Just like in school, as each year passes, more and more knowledge is gained. I think the same happens right here in my backyard. Last summer, I joined young legend Connor Herson on a sheer granite panel beside the University Wall in Squamish, climbing what would soon become the hardest trad pitch in the world: “Drifter’s Escape.” While I slowly put together the pieces of my own puzzle, I got to watch Connor connect all of his together in one flawless moment of execution. While giving him the send belay, my jaw stayed on the floor. I’d never seen someone climb with such a controlled balance of relaxation and try-hard. I feel incredibly grateful to have witnessed what I think will become a pivotal moment in the future of hard trad climbing. Over the years, Squamish has seen more and more 5.14 trad pitches established, and Drifter’s Escape feels like both a milestone and an early sign of what’s still to come. It takes more than just the elite climbers; it’s clear that the walls, the projects hidden in them, and the vision needed to discover them are all just as important. Sitting on the belay ledge beneath Drifter’s Escape or looking up at the Stawamus Chief, I can’t help but picture the future: one where I have the skill and mental fortitude to move up the wall like Connor, and where others realize they’re capable too with enough time and effort. Maybe one day 5.15a on gear will feel normal to the next generation. To read more about my thoughts on the climbing in Squamish and why I think the future of hard trad climbing could be right outside my bedroom window, check out my essay, “The School of Hard Rocks,” written for BD’s Spring catalog. If you missed this one in print, you can also read it now on their website—link in the @blackdiamond bio.

You’ve likely seen @janejackson22 styling routes in the photos we share in-store, online, and in print. But what you might not know is that you’ve probably also read her words. From articles to emails, Jane lends her talent to our team through her authentic outdoor-focused writing. She plays an integral part in our extended BD family. Truly “born from the climbing life,” Jane grew up in the Tetons with climbing parents, and began her first forays into the mountains before she could walk. But it was as a young adult that Jane found her own path to climbing. After graduating from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, Jane went to the dirtbag grad program of Yosemite Valley, where she worked for YOSAR, climbed everything she could, and began living the dream. For over a decade now, Jane has been sending it from Yosemite to Patagonia, and in the last year she ticked a lifetime goal of free climbing El Cap via the iconic Free Rider (VI 5.13a). But perhaps Jane’s biggest contribution to the climbing community is her words. From gear reviews, educational articles, thoughtful stories, and more, Jane has honed her craft to give us all a glimpse into the real deal world of the climbing life. Black Diamond is a family of lifers. Both in-house and in the field—we're one with the sports we serve. 📸: @christian_adam_

"They used to make fun of me because I would wear high heels, but I was also wearing climbing shoes," laughs Heidi Lister Hevesy. Heidi was deep in the New York fashion industry, but spent all her free time climbing in the Shawangunks. Working as a high-end print artist, Heidi's professional life in the Big Apple was a stark juxtaposition to her forays into the vertical world. Yet, Heidi's experience as an artist in New York during the 90's was formative, an eclectic blend of punk, Basquiat, high fashion, and climbing. Today, she draws on those experiences—quite literally—to create beautiful, handcrafted prints for the outdoor industry. Inspired by rock, Heidi's prints for our new spring apparel line tell a unique story. As she sifts through papers on a desk at BD, the origins of her creative process are breadcrumbs that lead back to the climbing life. These are textures you can feel with your eyes. Stone you've touched. Sky you've seen. The fact that these prints originate from Heidi's handdrawn lines and paint-sponged pieces—all inspired by nature—seem to bring you closer to the world they're intended to be worn in. Whether you wear the Alpenglow Hoody, Sierra Short, or Rift Fleece elevated by Heidi’s designs, you’re not just wearing a stylish, functional piece of clothing for the outdoors. You’re wearing handmade art. A labor of love for climbing.

Spoiler alert…it’s you. 🤝 This Earth Day, we want to reflect and thank you, our community, for continuing to fight for public lands. The attacks on public lands and the places we love have been constant over the past year under our current administration. We know protecting public lands is not just about outdoor recreation; these places are vital for water, biodiversity, local native tribes, and our national identity. Our fight is not over, but today seems like the perfect opportunity to thank you for speaking up, writing your reps, and caring about protecting the places we love. You can continue the fight by telling Congress to vote NO on erasing the management plan for Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument in Utah through Monuments for All. After writing your reps, we’ll see you out there, at the crag, on the skin track, and down the trail.

Feels so good to see @jacopolarcher reveal that diamond on his chest. 😮‍💨 From big wall free climbing to months-long alpine expeditions, Jacopo is one of the best all-around climbers out there. He’s no stranger to our gear, but we’re stoked to finally add BD apparel to his repertoire and tap into every facet of his many years of experience climbing at the highest levels in all disciplines. This soft-spoken Italian will be a serious asset to BD’s climbing equipment and apparel moving forward. Head to the link in our bio to watch Jacopo Larcher take down the James Pearson trad test piece route in Annot, France Bon Voyage (9a/5.14d)
