Thank you to the mothers of SISTA GRRRL RIOT, which was established in the late 90’s to counter the lack of inclusivity in the cis white centered Riot Grrrl movement. Their work laid the foundation for the Afro Punk movement

for this sixth day of #blackhistorymonth we celebrate Alexis Brown, lead singer of metalcore band Straight Line Stitch. She auditioned and joined the band in 2003. Together they expanded their reach beyond Tennessee.
Between 2006 and 2011 they released 3 albums and an EP (including 2006 album To Be Godlike, When Skies Wash Ashore in 2008, The Fight of Our Lives in 2011, and The Word Made Flesh EP, which was paired with music video “Remission”). The Fight of Our Lives reached No. 5 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and No. 34 on the Top Independent Albums chart. Straight Line Stitch continued on to perform at festivals such as the U.K.’s Download Festival and the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.
Alexis hoped that her role in metal history would inspire other women to enter the scene. For Damnation Magazine, she says the following about being a Black woman in metal. “When I first started out, it wasn’t so much my race, but more so when I came out [in music] there wasn’t a lot of females in metal, and I think that’s what shocked a lot of people. But now… there’s a bunch of women coming up and stuff. At first… I wouldn’t say that it was an adversity, but it was more like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that’s a chick.‘“
For Music Existence, she states “…we don’t use me being a black female in a metal band as a gimmick or think that that should make me special. We feel like we’re just like any other band. We’re just striving to get our music out.”
In a 2015 interview with Music Existence, she states about her early intro to alternative music “…I actually fell in love with KORN. That band inspired me to join a band, to front a band. I wanted to feel like Jonathan Davis; I wanted to embody Jonathan Davis. I got on stage, and I found myself. That’s kind of how I got my own identity.”
SLS centered networking, making meaningful friendships, and connecting with fans. They opted for a down to earth, authentic approach to their music, performance and relationship building.

BANDCAMP FRIDAY
From Bandcamp description: “Jezebel Diaries [by Cunty MeMe] is an ode to the spirit of Jezebel, blending jazzy, R&B, percussive, and Hip-Hop sounds. The sultry and vibrant spirit demonized throughout history that blesses all the dungeon masters, night walkers, and fantasy curators. She is the spirit who holds those forgotten and cast away by their mothers, fathers, families, and exploited by those in power. This EP was my chance to explore my vulnerabilities while also having fun with sound and showcasing my vocal abilities as a singer and songwriter. This is an entirely different sound from my other projects, but it was a beautiful process for me to grow as an artist. Mostly produced by @amada of closegood and me, this project takes you to a different world ending with a self-composed, piano-led track that leaves you pleading, begging to be seen as whole. “
