Rex’s Martini racing inspired track bike has been making the rounds on the internet recently I figured I would post the original set of pics from 2012 for throw back Thursday.

The use case for this bike is to ride C&O canal which is relatively close to my home. It’s 180+ miles of hard packed dirt and gravel which runs along side the Potomac River between Washington DC and Cumberland, MD.
Admittedly for me its form over function and I wanted minimal clearance between the fork crown and tires with knobby 33s. In theory this bike will take semi-smooth 35s but I’ve not had a chance to try those yet.
From day one I had to have the Samson Max Aero crown with straight bladed forks and I think the end result was worth the wait. The ti King headset wasn’t exactly planned and was more of a result of needing to make a decision and the ti version being released at the same time. $500 for a headset is pretty silly all things considered, but maybe less silly than this clearance for a gravel bike. 🤷♂️

Bicycle tubing Tuesday is here with another Italian treasure. I bought these round-octagonal-round tubes from Peter at Ceeway in the UK over fifteen years ago O primarily built stems with them over the years and decided to build a frame that I brought to the Philly Bike Expo. I was chatting with Peter the other day and asked the origin of them and he said Silva who is primarily known for making machined frame parts bridges, BB’s and many other braze on’s formed the tubes like the Gilco tubes they came in sizes with different octagonal lengths #steelbikes #rarebikes #fixie #fixedgear
Mitering Monday more fun with @columbus_official Gilco tubes since the tubes flutes need to be in phase with one another you have to put center lines on the tubes and line them up in the mitering fixture so that they line up as well as doing the best you can to center the flutes in the middle of the tube at least the top tube the best you can while optimizing the butts inside the tubes. A lot more time goes into this process than a standard tubeset the seat tube also came in sizes to accommodate the flutes but never has a lot of straight section for post insertion/adjustment
