A simple encounter with a woodpecker at age 15 changed @birdnerdeem ’s life forever. ‘Rudeboy’ is a short film for Planet Health Stories, a series in collaboration with @bupa exploring the inseparable bond between human and planetary health. Born and raised in East London, the streets taught him to be cold, hard and tough– like the city itself. Nadeem grew up against a backdrop of violence, crime and pressure from all sides. But in a quiet green graveyard, a moment of unexpected beauty inspired a new path and a desire to leave the world better than he found it. In Rudeboy, Nadeem tells the story of the moment a European green woodpecker– grass-green, black mask, red cap– appeared before him, happy being itself and letting him be himself without judgment. For Nadeem, that’s what being a rudeboy means: the freedom to exist authentically. This encounter sparked his journey to becoming a keen birdwatcher, wildlife TV presenter, writer, activist, and co-founder of @flocktogether.world – a birdwatching collective which aims to show that nature belongs to everyone, especially those who’ve been told it doesn’t. Today, his story reminds us that green spaces aren’t a luxury but a necessity – that chance encounters with wildlife provide the grounding, guidance and introspection essential for navigating mental health in the intensity of urban life, and that everyone deserves that access. But after constant rejection and other weird stuff, I hated it. My thing was that if ppl googled ‘NADEEM PERERA’ they’d see a face. A prop. And even back den I knew I had more to give the world. I wanted my impact to come frm ma THOUGHTS, WORDS and ACTIONS. Thru my creators grace, a determined will n da mentors I’ve been lucky enough to have, I’m now stepping into the journey of designing the exact impact I’ll have on the world and whilst it’s fashion adjacent at times, it’s mainly driven by connecting ideas, communities and stories to the planet we all share and lives on dat planet dat we may nvr usually acknowledge. I aint sum uber idealistic guy that wants to live off grid and not shower for weeks and become oddly obsessed w yoga. I’m from the GREEZIEST streets of east London where you rock your shoes a certain way, talk in a certain lingo and carry yourself with an undeniable energy. I’m still fascinated when I see shit I KNOW originated on my block gettin picked up by 12 year old Tarquin from Buckinghamshire, 20 years on. I really believe in culture, be it fashion, sports, video games or something else, and its ability to inspire the next chapter in this journey of connecting future gens to their planet. Now along the way I have been able to do some incredible work with incredible brands and shout out every brand that has backed me and let me create for them. There is a massive part of me that is validated by you guys. But I’m telling you all right now - nothing validates me more that the images in this post. A couple weeks ago @surreysqschool tagged me in a carousel to let me know that they named a class after me. I hit them straight away n said IM PULLING UP. The other day I did just that. We spent the afternoon together sharing fav animals, fav cakes and visions of the future. I brought them badges from @rspb too. Pure love to my creator, my mentors and may every ghetto yout reach long life n prosper
