Behind the Scenes | New Makers 2025
For the past eight years, we have invited craftspeople from around the world to apply for our New Makers programme. Selected artists receive expert guidance to support the growth of their businesses, along with a platform on TOAST to sell their handcrafted goods, with all profits returned to them.
We launched this mentorship scheme as an extension of our core values, rooted in thoughtful production and the preservation of centuries-old crafts. This year’s makers have been chosen for their innovative and inspiring approaches to such traditions.

A Woodland Lunch with Eat Ethio
In Wick Wood, a small patch of forest some 25 minutes from Canterbury West, we joined Helina Tesega and Scott Albon for lunch.
The couple are about to open Eat Ethio, a gallery-café-studio hybrid space anchored in Ethiopian food, but which also encompasses the ingredients, artisans and culture of Helina’s home country and events such as coffee ceremonies and herbal workshops.

Ikat Textiles
Our Ikat fabric is hand-woven from cotton yarns which are carefully bound together before being dipped in dye – the areas which are tightly wrapped are protected from the colour, creating unique patterns.
In the village of Yellanki in Andhra Pradesh, India, master weaver Bikshapati Kolaan leads a group of artisans who create our seasonal Ikat fabrics. Meanwhile, our one-of-a-kind Ikat jackets are kantha-stitched and sewn together by women who are part of two Indian cooperatives.
For Spring Summer 2026, our ikat shirt features a large-scale broken check pattern.

A Considered Home
Judith Harris’s first homeware position was for TOAST some 16 years ago, working with the original founders. After a period at The Conran Shop, she returned to TOAST in 2018 as Head of Home. “The opportunity to build a collection of craft-focused pieces and curate a range of homeware to sit alongside the clothing collections was an exciting prospect.”
Alongside our main Home range, each year Judith curates the New Makers collection. “Each year we look to support emerging artisans who are blending traditional craft techniques with contemporary design,” says Judith. “The selections all explore technique, material and form to create something unique in the field of the handmade.”
