The man, the myth, the legend, Sir David Attenborough turns 100 on Friday 8 May! To celebrate, we're throwing a rocking birthday party (Tī Kouka, UCSA 7-10pm) and you're invited! Tickets are in the link in our bio! (Free for BIOSOC members and $2 for non members). See you there!
Keen to get away from studying and do some crafting? Come join us in the makerspace this Thursday (19th March) from 5 to 7pm!
We'll be focusing on making hand sewn felt plushies (of which you'll see some examples in the second slide), but you could make bead bracelets, or crochet, or knit!! You could also use it as an excuse to get some alternations done while hanging out with fellow biology enjoyers.
We'll provide some felt, beads, thread, yarn, and safety eyes, plus whatever is available at the makerspace. Feel free to bring your own materials if you want!
See you there :) 🧶🧵🧶
Attention all biodiversity lovers‼️‼️
We're running our Bioblitz event again this year, fortnightly or otherwise regularly. This is a fun excuse to get involved in citizen science (or science science!) by contributing to our knowledge of biodiversity on campus.
➡️ Where and when????
We've left dates, times, and locations off this post on purpose so that we can switch these up throughout the year! Keep an eye on our stories (and soon to be made highlight) for info on the next bioblitz! We'll aim to send out warning about a week in advance, and then again a day or two in advance, and then on the day! Or you'll get all the info in our (Biosoc) fortnightly email.
➡️ So, what do I need?
Only the iNaturalist app on your phone, we can help you install and make an account if you don't already have one. We will supply nets, beat trays, and specimen tubes for bugs, and will also try and have microscopes set up at the Waiutuutu Community Gardens to get a closer look at any interesting finds! If you have them, a magnifying lens or a camera is super handy!
➡️ How will it run?
We will meet at a specified location, and from there go for a walk somewhere on campus. We'll search the ground and surrounding foliage for insects, mushrooms, moss, slime molds, animals, you name it! We'll take photos, and if appropriate collect some specimens for identification. If we get enough people we may split into focal groups, for example one group focusing on bug hunting while another group goes elsewhere and looks for mushrooms. We may do this for about two hours, stay as long as you like! If you can't make the start but want to come, get in touch and we'll try our best to let you know where to find us.
This is a great way to meet new people, take a break from studying and get outside, and gain some useful experience if your interest is in biodiversity conservation!
We look forward to seeing you this year 😁🌿🍄🦎🦆🪱🕷️🪳🦠🦋
